    Said the crusty, old prospector.

A heavy, lead bullet of 250+ grains at moderate velocity of just under a thousand feet per second will do anything you would ever want with a handgun.

I really like the dust clouds put up by misses on the range.

The real question is why 44 mag? Colt was here first and anything a 44 mag can do has already been done in 45 Colt.

The original name for the cartridge was indeed 45 Colt. The Long Colt name was first applied when the 45 Schofield was used by the Army. 45 Schofield could be used in 45 Colt guns but not the other way around, hence the new name. The Long Colt name serves to distinguish the 45 Colt from 45 ACP now.

Given how common the Long Colt designation is these days, it seems a bit pedantic to insist that 45 Colt is the only proper name.

          For example:

Note that the last item is from Colt itself.

I would love a Charter Bulldog in 45LC for CCW. Nothing that walks on two legs or four in CA that it will not stop.

                  Depends on the movie.
You can have just as much fun and more mild to wild loads with your 44 mag. A Ruger Super Blackhawk will eat anything you feed it. There are plenty of lever actions in 44 Mag. The Big Boy carbine is on my list. I'll get the brass receiver one to match the brass grip frame of my Ruger SBH.

I really wish we can get the 45LC (or 45ACP for that matter) here in CA. I would shoot that gun all the time.

45LC in a S&W Mountain Gun, is a thing of beauty.

I’m REALLY hoping for a .45 Bulldog or Pitbull to get added to roster - personally I’d prefer the Bulldog in .45 Colt just for simplicity’s sake (and sexiness!).

Because there is a 45 colt short and a 45 Schofield along with a 45acp, there is a 45 long colt. You can call it a colt and others can call it a colt long.

Because it's the cartridge that won the West.

I got lucky with my Lipsey's New Model Flattop .45/.45ACP aux cylinder Blackhawk. It's the only SA I own that I didn't feel inclined to do an action job on, which means a lot in that I can't leave well enough alone... It's a great shooter.

American Eagle is a fine hotter-than-cowboy load you can shoot all day long in whatever .45LC you choose, assuming you don't reload. Good stuff! And if you want to just plink get the Cowboy loads and save the brass as most are Starline. You can either reload or save and sell the brass to a grateful re-loader for another box or two. Winning.

I have had a few S&W 25 in 45 Colt, still have one that is sweet. She loves 45 ACP 200 Grain SWC bullets loaded 45 Colt brass, one of my most accurate revolvers/load. (Note that my OAL is long, to fit my cylinder only, and is does not meet specs). Do not use this load data. I will always have one 45 Colt in my toy box.

If you have to ask....you most likely don't have to bother. Certain firearms command such a caliber.
