Hello,

I am interested in building a 2011 limited handgun from a frame kit.
Never done this before, so I would like to seek advice.

What's the difference between PPT a 2011 frame and PPT a complete gun?
Can I ask the seller how did he obtain the frame, from SSE, LEO or regular PPT?

Now is it perfectly legal to build a handgun from a frame kit?

Any recommendation for good gun smith who can do this project?

There is really no point in building a firearm unless you are doing the building yourself. (Custom hi end builds aside). It’s just not cost effective.

PPT is same. And legal to build from a frame kit.

For a good gunsmith, post in the Gunsmithing forum, someone there should be able to help you out .

If the factory (07-FFL created) virgin receiver/frame is DROS'd as a "handgun, pistol, receiver/frame"; then it can legally be used to only make a dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistol or dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistol.
Per CA DOJ, a handgun that is made as a a dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistol or dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistol, needs to remain configured as such in order to remain CA legal.

If the factory (07-FFL created) virgin receiver/frame is DROS'd as a "handgun, pistol, semi-auto" or "handgun, pistol, semi-auto, receiver/frame"; then it can be used to make a semi-auto pistol that does not violate CA assault weapons laws and CA prohibited weapons laws.

My gut feeling is if the frame kit is from STI, Pheonix Trinity, CK arms, etc... then it's not built from SSE. And most likely it's "handgun, pistol, semi-auto, receiver/frame".
On ther other hand, if the frame is built from SSE, then most likely it's "handgun, pistol, receiver/frame".

You're probably right about the SSE part.

But how it was DROSed is completely different. The FFL who did the original transfer would have picked the way it was DROSed.

The other thing you have to consider is how is the dealer that transfers it to you going to do it?

So much headache involved nowadays with frame/receiver only transfers for handguns, it's better you just find the complete gun as close to how you want it as possible and do a PPT. Then, change out anything else you want to customize to your preference. Since SSE 2.0, getting an operational semi-auto handgun that isn't rostered is a much different animal than before.

There's a lot of fitting required to get them to run correctly.

Hahaha unless Legos require a lot of fitting and fine tuning to run properly than yea. A giant Lego headache for some.

No they do not, also remember just making them physically fit one must still know how to time everything so it actually works as well.

The OP did ask for gunsmith recommendations to do the build for him.

Para Ordnance started selling 1911 wide body frames as a "gunsmith kit" before selling complete guns. I picked one up from King's Gunworks in Glendale, CA and completed the kit with King's parts and a Caspian slide.

I'd take my project to King's and their gunsmith was kind enough to check it out in various stages. King's had a great assortment of custom aftermarket 1911 parts like sears, hammers, triggers, bushings, springs, sights, grip safeties, etc.

I've purchased frames pre and post roster, but never noticed the "semi-auto or pistol" designation, just "frame/receiver." I can't remember the last time I bought a frame. Maybe 5 years ago.
