I'm most comfortable with my G19 as I've had it the longest and have shot it the most with 100% reliability. My main concern with my Glock is the point KevinA made and I'm surprised nobody else has brought it up yet..

I've heard plenty of people talk about modified guns "not looking good in court" but have yet to see or hear of an incident where someone received a harsher sentence because they used a modified gun to protect themselves..
Does anyone have any proof to this or is it just FUD?

If it is a justifiable shoot, there shouldn't be ANY sentence at all.

I don't fall into the camp that thinks that a "Gucci" gun will add any fire to any prosecutor's case. For one thing, you should never be facing a prosecutor for shooting some guy standing in front of your daughter's bedroom with a roll of duct tape and a knife.

It I'm ever asked "Were you just hoping for someone to break in, so you could shoot them with your fancy souped up hair trigger gun?"
I'd answer "What's wrong with you? Is that how you think? As for the modifications I made to the gun, they were made to enable me to more accurately hit the target I was aiming for so that there would be no stray bullets flying towards innocent bystanders. Are you suggesting that I should not have done everything in my power to prevent the injury of innocents?"

ie; I shot a guy that I felt threatened me. End of story. What difference does it make what I shot him with?

And as for having an expensive $5000 gun locked up in an evidence room for 6 years .. who cares? It saved your life didn't it? Isn't that worth $5000?

I would rather have an expensive pistol locked up for years and keep my life than use some shoddy vanilla wheelgun and have all the females in my house raped and all the men castrated and killed.

Im not jerry miculek, and I will never in my life be able to reload a wheel gun as fast as I can a semi-auto.

I'm embarassed. I bought the FAS1 safe like 5 years ago and I've yet to bolt it to anything in my bedroom. I bought it specifically for a Glock 17 with attached light. So it was also my choice (both the safe and the gun) for home defense.

Now that's a first.. a small .380 for home self-defense?
I know there's always been the debate of .380 being just as effective as 9mm but I've watched too many videos telling me stopping power and capacity is just as important as a couple of shots center mass. I don't think I'd trust my life with something smaller than a 9mm.. although I suppose 'something' is better than nothing.

Proximity of neighbors? This is an issue with a 357. If you live in a more archetypal American Single family detached home that may not be an issue. Just the old 'know your target and what is beyond it' thing.

Proximity of other loved ones to your location? Kids may attempt to come to you. Someone mentioned the old school pump action 870/500. If its just you or two of you and target discrimination is not going to be an issue, hard to argue with that option.

Of your list, nothing wrong with the Block or the M1911, But I'd go with the CZ personally.

Someone else also recommended the Underwood HD ammo. I'm more a fan of the 92Gr +P Extreme Defender personally.

I'm also a big advocate to weapon mounted lights. May god/buddha/the great pumpkin forbid you ever actually need to use this. But if you do, odds are, it will be in a low/no light situation. Prepare accordingly.

A bunch of great points here. No kids in the home (yet), just the wife and I. May have to rethink my options once we have kids, as their bedrooms will be on the other side of the house.

Single family detached home, no real issue of the bullets piercing through a neighbor's home.

As far as ammo, I've switched back and forth between the Sig V-crown JHP and the Hornady Critical Defense. According to some tests on Youtube, they're both decent self-defense loads.

I think people look down on Gucci Glocks vs stock Glocks simply because of cost and to a lesser extent reliability. A used police trade in Glock 22 for $350 will work just as well for HD as a $5000+ Gucci Glock. Its really a no brainer. I'd rather lose a "cheap" gun than a pricey custom gun, all things being equal.

I must admit, I'm surprised the revolver is still fighting against the Glock and 1911. I never really considered it as a 'great' main home self-defense choice(mostly due to the capacity). The "ease of use" factor is a good point.

I think thats exactly the point. The USP45 is probably the best HD gun on the roster. 10rds of .45, DA/SA, ultra reliable, grip is very manageable for a doublestack 45 not nearly as large as a Glock, light recoiling. If it had a picatinny rail, button mag release, and cost $500 it would be perfect. The USP is one of the easiest guns to shoot, the thing damn near aims itself.
