The FFL did however ship it back USPS in one of those small Priority Mail boxes.

Others have commented FFL can ship via USPS, IDK. But I did receive my lower back from the FFL via USPS....FWIW
There are gun parts and then there are firearms, which include frames, receivers, etc.

If you look at the postal regulations, you will see what the limitations are. Yes, a FFL can ship a handgun USPS, but look at what the 1508 says, you have to list the addresses on the packages and those addresses have to be a manufacturer or dealer. A customer isn't a dealer.

The shipping of a handgun back to you via USPS isn't legal and the frame is a firearm and a handgun. Some seem to think that it isn't illegal unless you get caught.

Just had nighthawk do work on a 1911 of mine my options were send the gun complete using 2day with either Fedex or UPS around $35 insured each way. Or USPS priority using 2 different packages. 1 package is the upper, 1 is the lower. Per USPS this was ok as I wasn’t shipping a functioning gun in a single package. Total shipped with USPS was around $30 round trip.

The local USPS told you was OK to send a handgun receiver/frame in the mail with you not being a FFL? I'd want that in writing if they told me that.

^^^ That is not what federal law says so if you did you got lucky. You cannot even ship a rifle lower withput complete rifle involved. Been posts on this ruled on by our resident AC'S.

usps just lost my glock slide... They are still 'trying to find it' two months later.

With UPS at least you have a real tracking number that means something. If usps loses something, basically consider it gone forever...go luck trying to cash in on the insurance either... They're currently telling me the item isn't actually lost yet because they are looking for it lol...

              Bad info multiple times over.

Unless you have a contract with UPS/FedEx, their policy, not law, is overnight air for handguns.

Note: Receivers or frames of a firearm and firearm mufflers/silencers (also referred to as suppressors) are considered "firearms" and are accepted for transportation only if shipped in accordance with UPS's requirements for shipping firearms.)
Service Guide is your resource for FedEx service information and shipping basics.

              A. FedEx Express will transport and deliver firearms as defined by the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, between areas served in the U.S., but only between:

              1. Licensed importers; licensed manufacturers; licensed dealers; licensed collectors; law enforcement agencies of the U.S. or any department or agency thereof; and law enforcement agencies of any state or any department, agency or political subdivisions thereof; or

              2. Where not prohibited by local, state and federal law, from individuals to licensed importers, licensed manufacturers or licensed dealers (and return of same).

              B. If your shipment contains firearms, select the Direct Signature Required or Adult Signature Required Delivery Signature Option, depending on the requirements of your shipment. See the Delivery Signature Options section for details. Firearms shipments are not eligible for signature release or indirect delivery.

              C. Firearms must be shipped via FedEx Priority Overnight service. FedEx Express cannot ship or deliver firearms C.O.D. Firearms shipments cannot be placed in a FedEx Express Drop Box. Firearms shipments are not eligible to be held at Hold at Location facilities.

              D. Upon presenting the package for shipment, the person tendering the shipment to FedEx Express is required to notify FedEx Express that the package contains a firearm. The outside of the package must not be marked, labeled or otherwise identify that the package contains a firearm.

              E. The shipper and recipient must be of legal age as identified by applicable law.

              F. The shipper and recipient are required to comply with all applicable government regulations and laws, including those pertaining to labeling. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives can provide assistance.

              G. FedEx Express will transport ammunition when packed and labeled in compliance with local, state and federal law, and the Dangerous Goods section of this Service Guide. Ammunition is an explosive and must be shipped separately as dangerous goods. You agree not to ship loaded firearms or firearms with ammunition in the same package.

              A. FedEx Ground will transport and deliver firearms (excluding handguns) as defined by the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, between areas served in the U.S., but only between:

Firearms shipments are not eligible for signature release, driver release or indirect delivery.

              C. FedEx Ground cannot ship or deliver firearms C.O.D. Firearms shipments are not eligible to be held at Hold at Location facilities.

              D. Upon presenting the package for shipment, the person tendering the shipment to FedEx Ground is required to notify FedEx Ground that the package contains a firearm.

              G. FedEx Ground will transport small-arms ammunition when packed and labeled in compliance with local, state and federal law, and the Hazardous Materials section of this Service Guide. Ammunition is an explosive and must be shipped separately as hazardous materials. You agree not to ship loaded firearms or firearms with ammunition in the same package.

              H. FedEx Ground will not accept for transport handguns, assembled or disassembled.
With USPS, it is the law.

I shipped my Ruger Super Blackhawk from Northern California via UPS. Ruger supplied the box. I had to take the boxed gun to the UPS hub down in Sacramento (no storefront UPS allowed) for overnight air shipment. The total was a stunning $97 and change!
The gun made it to Ruger in two days, Ruger did their work, and returned it to me no charge. On balance, the hundred bucks I spent was worth it.

It is just their policy, which a contract can change, so it would be valid for Springfield as they have a contract, but not for you. There are requirements that they have to meet in the contract.
