I'm about to ship my 1911 for some work and I'm reading there's some headaches involving firearms being shipped as well as insurance. I've read that you have to have the original receipt to declare its value then and then USPS will declare the real depreciation value of the item now if lost. Which could totally screw someone over hundreds. Also read you have to declare at the post office to the employee that its a firearm in the package before handing it over to them.

You, a non-FFL, may not ship a handgun through USPS, per their rules. See Publication 52, https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htm#ep351100
You might ship a long gun - that's permitted, although some of the counter people seem resistant to the idea.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

A private person, (non FFL) cannot ship a handgun using the US Postal Service, even it it is going to an FFL. Long guns are ok, but no handguns. You can use either UPS or FedEx. Both will accept handguns from a private party as long as they are going to an FFL. You may want to check out both on the Internet as they both have specific rules as it relates to a private party shipping a gun. They will do it, but you will have to jump thru a hoop or two.
I have shipped both hanguns and long guns over the years. I usually use the US Postal Service for long guns, and FedEX for handguns, mainly because of convenience. Keep in mind when I say FedEX, I am referring to a FedEX owned hub, not a mall store front. contract station.

I shipped a hand gun to a gunsmith in Montana last year by FedEx. It was returned shipped to me by FedEx as well. I disclosed on the FedEx shipping form and it wasn't a problem.Comment

Due to the policy of UPS/FedEx which require overnight shipping, it can be cheaper to have a FFL ship it for you. There is an issue with insurance since it is the shipper who has to deal with it, so if there is an issue with the value, they would need to be the one to fight it and most likely a FFL isn't going to want to spend a lot of time and effort on it. Fortunately, it isn't as common as some thing to have an item lost or damaged. They also spend more effect to find it when it is a firearm and lost.
There is a web site which can be used to assist in shipping firearms, it is shipmygun.com. I have never used them, but other say that it works well.Kemasa.

This is where knowing and being friends with a brick and mortar FFL local store is nice.
I knew the local guys and they shipped my gun back to the factory for me (even though I didn't by it from them) I paid the shipping and they shipped it from me. (much easier to drop it off there that take it to the UPS or FedX hub)Comment

I’ve never had any problems with FedEx.sigpicComment

Why you need a middleman? If he's an FFL just ship directly to him via UPS or FedEx. FedEx is more better as far as rates go. It has to go next day air.
The return will go straight to your door too.
Last time I shipped a couple handguns out for work I used UPS and it was literally 2x the cost of FedEx.
There's this thing on the internets called Google and if you type in "hard chrome guns southern california" it will bring up a shop in Sun Valley and a shop in Orange. Try it out, its really cool. Can use it for all sorts of other stuff too.
