Stick with mid to full size guns. No sub compacts like the Shield or similar. Something with either a 4 inch or 5 inch barrel and a full grip.

Not only will you sort out more in a range session than anything we can tell you here...but it will be fun.

If you get the Beretta, you can get an OEM “D” spring and shave 4lbs off the DA trigger pull. Beretta sells some of their guns outfitted with it and it’s a factory part to boot. The Beretta is my personal favorite DA/SA pistol.

From someone who has owned all 3, I would rank them in this order, best to worst:

1. Glock 19/17
2. CZ75
3. Beretta 92fs

The Glock has a very predictable trigger that will feel the same every pull where the DA/SA pull of the other 2 is hard to get used to. And the Glock trigger only gets better with use (or do a polish job)

If he shoots the CZ cocked and locked the trigger will be a lot better than the Glock's.

Looking at purchasing my first hand( 9mm semi auto) I'm leaning towards a cz75 but I'm also considering a Glock 19 or a beretta 92. I'm looking for something that I could eventually use in 3 gun and possibly other competitions down the road.

I have only ever fired the Glock so I have no real experience other then holding them in the store. Opinions? Other possible guns I've over looked in that price range(5-900 ish)?

Get the G19 after you also try the G17 which I prefer (but not for CCW)

Unless you are going to use the gun for CCW, no reason to get a Glock 19. The Glock 34 will do everything the 19 does and do it better, with the exception of CCW.

I own a CZ75BD as well as an HK USP 9C, both are fine pistols.

HK may be an option, maybe a bit above budget though.

Me, personally, prefer hammer fired pistols. I have absolutely nothing against Glock, but they just don't click with me. To each their own.

In your price range I'd say Glock 34. As your first gun I'd go with striker fired rather than a DA/SA firearm.

If you want velocity than a 19 is for you cause the cz75 has a 3.7 inch barrel but for the beretta it's more long then the 19/17. I have only two 9mm pistol and that's a CZ75 P01 and the Beretta M9A1 INOX. That's is all I need for 9mm however my other caliber is for another time.

Heavier with hammers always feel better to me as well. Maybe the weight or seeing the action. Not sure. Just know it's way cooler and more fun to work and shoot. That being said, do have strikers but not as "emotionally" involved
