As off roster guns are too expensive, my choices would be:
Glock 26,19.
Any Kahr steel or poly.
and of course the Shield.
And then there is all the guns chambered in 9mm Short ...

A couple of people have mentioned the MK9, but I say if you've got large hands get the K9 so you can have a full grip:

The trigger is a short DAO - apparently very smooth and non-stacking. I'm planning on getting one myself as my "super-nice" range/HD/occasional carry gun. It's striker-fired but totally different than the other striker guns.Julian

Try to rent one or shoot somebody elses first before you buy a Khar. My friend has one and I absolutely hated it. Thought it was the worst trigger I ever tried, definitely the longest trigger pull known to man. And I like HK DA/SA triggers.A couple of people have mentioned the MK9, but I say if you've got large hands get the K9 so you can have a full grip:

Perfect pic for comparing overall size. Very nice.
I was handling the HK2000 when deciding between it and the Shield. Ended up with the Shield that day but will be back for the HK. Thanks for postingsigpic

Sub-compact and compact are two different worlds; you need to decide between those first to narrow it down.
Example: a glock 19 is a compact and nearly the size of a duty gun vs a SW shield is much smaller and much more comfortable to conceal (I've ccw both for years each). But of course the G19 size class will have more capacity and shootaility and still be concealable.
Point is you need to narrow it down, at least half the pistols in the US are in your current criteria so you're going to be getting recommendations all over the map.-------------------------Comment

I am a proponent of carrying the "biggest" gun you can comfortably and realistically get away with. That said I carry a 19 probably 80% of the time, If it's summer and I am wearing shorts or cant carry my 19, I'll carry a 43. If I had to pay a premium for a 43, I'd have a 9mm Shield instead and wouldn't feel like I was missing out on anything.Comment
