I would have made the mark on my 1911 also, if it hadn't been for posts like this that warn of the danger in the first place.

That mark would have cost me sleepless nights, as it's avoidable, no offense to the OP, I just was fortunate enough to come to this good site and hear of the problem before hand.

    Here's what helped me:

It is like losing your virginity of owing your first 1911.

Also, use as a justification to buy another 1911 which will not have the idiot mark.

If you're worried about getting scratches on your firearms don't take them out of the box.
Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison

The Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms. -- Samuel Adams, Debates and Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 86-87 (Pearce and Hale, eds., Boston, 1850)

I could understand the one in the OP. But how do you get a scratch starting near the trigger?

Yeah but its not that deep, I'm sure I could polish it out if I felt the need.

                    Hence the term "idiot scratch"?

I'm fine with wear marks due to use but these kinds of marks just frighten me. Luckily I knew about these types of marks before I put my gun back together. No idiot marks for me!

                              Push slowly.

I also use two layers of tape on the frame and slide and it has saved me a few times.
