Must be talking about my BFR in 460 S&W with a 2-6 scope

kingmanbondgraham, if you have a hankering for a 454, indulge it, it's a great decision. While shooting 454 or 45 colt is silly from a 460, shooting 45 colt does make perfect sense from a 454 gun (except a freedom arms, but you have to hold one to understand why, it's a fine shooting iron). Nice that a 454 is built to take 65ksi (even an AR15 isn't really set up for that), so any 45 colt +P or cowboy colt is fine.
But 454 is great too. Uses a small rifle primer so if you reload, chances are good you are set up for small primer, and you can reload something big with your existing small primers.
People already gave you great advice. Get a single action. You can get a ruger redhawk for DA, but why? SA is a cult. Like watching Army of Darkness for the first time it might sound silly, but after puling the trigger you may be a convert.
You've got three great choices for a single action:
Ruger blackhawk
Magnum Research BFR
Freedom Arms model 83.
I suggest a 6-7.5 inch barrel, anywhere in there. The longer barrel gives you a better sight radius, softer recoil, and as someone here said, you aren't drawing for rapid fire anyways. Not a gun you strap to your waist to go on a casual hike, it's purpose specific. I would buy a 7.5 if I bought one tomorrow. You buy a simply rugged OWB holster and a chest harness and carry on the chest.
The blackhawk is $750 on gunbroker. Dunno what good deals go for. You are getting $750 worth of gun if you buy one. (to be honest, I'd skip this option. Were I buying a big blackhawk, I'd want it in 480 Ruger!)
The BFR retail is like $1000-1100. You can find BFR 454's in the 800 range or less if you wait long enough. You are getting $1000 worth of gun if you buy one.
The FA is like $1800, sometimes you see them on gunbroker for $1300. You are getting at LEAST $1300 worth of gun when you buy a FA. More if you get extras.
-----------------
Factory ammo is still available. Reloading is cheap, you can use most cheap bullets for all but the really hairy loads. barnes bullets are available. factory lead free is available. The SA (all) can take scopes or irons. Nice aftermarket irons are available if you have to have the best. Bushnell and leupold optics can take the abuse of the recoil easily.
When I take my 460 out I'm good for about 125 rounds in a range session if I just go to an indoor range for an hour. dunno about weenies just shooting a few. Probably just not reloaders and don't want to spend so much money on factory ammo in one hour.
I really don't know what else to say. This forum is so filled with DA-only threads with respect to the 10% of threads on revolvers, everyone else likes semi auto pistols. The 454 is great, and great in a single action package. Never a bad choice. Do it!
(someone was selling a couple BFR's in 454 on the forum here a couple years ago for around $650. Talk about a deal!)

$929 on gunbroker. You can get one used for quite a bit less if you are willing to wait for a deal.
