Freedom Arms Premier model 83. No finer single action revolver built.

          Single action are roster exempt.

There is a very nice Lipsey's 454 from Ruger. Bisley grip too which should make it a bit less punishing.

I haven't fired this so just pointing it out.

I had the Ruger SAB and while it is an amazing gun I also hated it and ended up selling it. The gun has two uses, as a side arm in bear country and as "Wow, that a BFG" gun. That's about it.

The barrel is too short for anything else. It kicks hard enough to be unpleasant to shoot. I'm 6'2" and a CCW instructor, I shoot a lot and I disliked shooting it. Also it's slow to fire.

I had bought it as I have property up in Montana and I used that to "justified" my purchase with the wife. But in the end I never ended up carrying it. It's heavy, bulky and as I said, slow. Slow to draw, slow to fire, slow on follow up shots. Sloooow.

Besides, up there I can carry a standard capacity polymer 45. 14 rounds of some good 45 acp can and has stopped a brown bear. The the real truth is that if you are in an area with Browns/Grizzly you should be carrying a rifle pure and simple.

As such I'd recommend the other Ruger with the longer barrel. It has more uses, you can hunt with it AND it still is a BFG showpiece if that is what you are after. Also typically longer barrel revolvers seem to have a lower resale price. Most guys want a short barrel and as such that gives you some bargaining chips if you buy one used.

I vote for the Freedom Arms Model 83 single-action---have two---simply the FINEST revolver made (yes I've owned a Python)---if you can afford one, you've bought the best!

My vote is S&W .460. Can't beat the ability to shoot multiple calibers in one revolver. .45 Colt is like a cap gun out of the big X-frame and .454 and .460 aren't so bad, either.

Go single action in any of the calibers they are all off roster first of all, (unless you really hate the grip, but you will get used to it) its also safe from double taps as the result of a loose grip. I have a 45-70 Magnum research BFR, very nice and very reasonable for the money AND overbuilt for the task. I vote you go with 458 caliber for bullet variety, but its a non issue if you will be buying ammo and not reloading. 460 is good if you want to shoot other rounds....but why did you buy in that caliber anyway? to shoot a smaller round? Also dont expect accuracy from shooting a short round in a longer cylinder like 45LC out of 460SW. Which reminds me...I forget if 454 or 460 come in a short cylinder from Magnum research...if not then ruger and freedom arms (expensive) are your other option for short cylinder.

I've not shot a 454, but was at my range when some people were firing it. It sounded like someone hit something with a sledgehammer and a village of people melted. Yes, I was at an indoor range.

I've never heard so many grown men giggle like school girls...the only thing is..they stopped after a few rounds. My guess is that it really punished them to shoot. Unless you plan to take it with you into the woods where grizzly bears are known to go after you, I doubt you'll enjoy it much after 2 or 3 rounds.

The 460v seems like a good choice though since you can shoot relatively mild loads with the 45LC....if you want to show off at the range you can then shoot the 454 or 460.

Depends entirely on the load used. You can go mild to wild to downright brutal.
Personally, I wouldn't have even considered owning a .454 if I couldn't reload for it.

Can't say anybody who's tried mine giggled but it does bring a chuckle & a grin.
