The "it's too pretty or too valuable to lose" is not a good way to think about it *IF* the alternative gun is not suitable for self defense.

In reality, most modern guns are reliable and suitable for self defense, so picking a cheaper one in case it's lost to evidence bin is not as bad as you are making it look. A much more important factor is the familiarity and ability to use the particular HD gun under stress.

My good friend's MC Operator is reportedly trouble free with any ammo he puts through it. So is my Scorpion 1911. None of that matters though as they aren't the actual pistol you own (or planning to own). Whatever you end up with, you need to make sure it fires reliably with the ammo and magazines you use.

        WTB used AK MFER.

I use a Sig P226 Scorpion as my nightstand gun, since it has a rail and light mounted to it. If need be my SA 1911 is close by ready to go. I picked up my SA 1911 in January this year and has put about 1200 flawless rounds through it.

A little fix if you want to list it for sale on CalGuns (internal joke, regulars will get it.)

Why would anyone NOT use their best, most reliable gun for HD just because of what might happen to it after you had to use it to protect yourself and your family?

In CA, most of the time you'll have to sell all your other guns + your furniture, house and cars to pay your legal bills. Avoiding using the best tool you own during the most devastating event you'll ever experience just seems goofy.

Well said, I am in 100% agreement with this position. My God, in a potentially life threatening situation why would anyone not use their very best equipment to insure a positive outcome.

+1 for "whatever you're proficient with". I keep a Mossberg for HD/SD but also have a Springfield mil spec 1911.

I found mine didn't like aftermarket 10 round mags even though they were mfg by Springfield. I had a couple FTE while using them. Since then, I keep everything factory and it's been running like a champ.

Regardless of what option you go with for home defense, I would recommend keeping it factory; besides nightsights.

Gun is still super tight and dead nuts accurate.

interesting. I have mine, and love it as well, but after 600 of no cleaning, it won't fully return to battery about 2 times on a fully loaded mag.

When fully clean, i'd trust it for a nightstand gun.

So, you are the guy that will not use the best parashute when is time to bail the airplane, because you know, you may rip it...

If you end up using a firearm in HD, loosing that firearm will be by far the least of your worries!

yup, my thoughts exactly I have an XD 45, reliable, but if it were gone, I wouldn't lose much sleep over it. If I lost any of my 1911s, I'd pretty much be devastated

You can certainly choose whatever you like. What you are missing here, is that most of the people, me included, believe HD firearm choice should not be based on the firearm value.

I agree to an extent, which is why I wouldn't choose a highpoint. I do however, like my 1911 much more than my Glock (omg I own both!). In all hypotheticals, after all the dust settles in an HD situation, I'd lose a lot more sleep after losing my 1911. Although I'd still be happy to be alive and well.
