    nightstand worthy? 1911 MC operator

I hear a lot of people say 1911s aren't reliable enough to be a home defense weapon but I want your opinions. For those of you that own or have experience with 1911s. I shot the Springfield MC operator at a gun show and fell in love with it. Question is, is the MC operator (.45cal) reliable enough out of the box to be a dependable home defense weapon? What's your opinion and why.

The MC Operator is definitely a reliable 1911, but I would never use it as a self defense gun. I would just use a reliable polymer. It would hurt less if LE took it for evidence.

Wow. An "is the 1911 reliable" thread. What's it been? 17 hours since the last.

Yes they are. Get good magazines.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

Any gun, in any decent caliber that you have many hours of range time shooting hundreds of rounds through, is the only way to prove it is reliable and a good night stand gun. Even better if you take some classes.

I have owned and shot a number of 1911’s. One or two were WW2 era that rattled and made funny sounds whenever they were handled, and a couple were so tight that it was difficult to do basic maintenance. My current “go to” 1911 is a 1970’s Colt combat commander that Jim Hoag built for me. It is 100% reliable and much more accurate that I am. Now having said that, my “night stand” gun is a Glock 34 with a light/laser attached.

It has been my experience that a generation or so ago, just about every 1911 made had to have a trip to a knowledgeable gunsmith for a reliability package. It is my current impression that many of today’s crop are reasonably reliable right out of the box. Please note how I qualified that statement. While I do like and as noted have owned a number of 1911’s, they do need much more TLC that many of the more contemporary pistols on the market today.

As far as I am concerned, John Browning was a genuine genius and his impact on the world of firearms nothing short of revolutionary. Given that you asked your question here, I assume your experience with handguns is relative limited. Accordingly, you may want to look at pistols of more recent design.

The more important question is are you worthy of the 1911?

Buy it and run the gun with HJP rounds.. see if it performs gooc enough to be your night stand gun.

I love my MCO, and yes it is reliable, but I went with the XD9 for this reason.

They (1911) were reliable enough in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and they were reliable enough for a lot of law enforcement agencies throughout the US. Why wouldn't it be good for home defense?

A revolver is my first choice and in my night stand. Totally reliable and never a question about whether it is going to work or not.

From my personal experience the more rounds you run through a 1911 the more reliable it becomes. I have an old Springy Mil-Spec that had to go back to Springfield for a new extractor but afterward it runs like a top. Sadly I sold it, I wish I didn't have because I love how it wears. That being said I am in the process of obtaining another Springy.

I have an MC operator but have yet to shoot it. My Loaded 1911 is my go to gun. Has not failed me yet. Not one FTF or FTE. Just runs smooth and is fun to shoot. Frankly I don't want to jinx myself but the thing is a beast. Hell I didn't clean it for a month after my last time shooting and it still worked! I know mind blowing....
