9mm is my choice, simply because I shoot it better. 45acp is second, .40 is a distant third.

With range ammo, the difference is negligible for me. It becomes pronounced with full power carry ammo.

9mm or even .380 in subcompacts. .40 is too much to handle well in those small packages.

#1 9mm is still cheaper to shoot than .40
#2 Since this is CCW, chances are you might not be able to even get 10 rounds of 9mm (ex: S&W shield), so in this case the more rounds the better (even if it's only 1 or 2 extra).

Although...feel free to get a .40 and report back You'll probably agree with "Mossy Man"'s last comment.

        P.S.
The thing for me is once you start getting into the 6-7 round capacity, the more I start favoring revolvers in general.

Yeah basically this. You can't post a topic title of "40s&w vs 9mm" and not expect some debate over the calibers...

Otherwise, you'll just get a simple answer like mine above "9mm" with no reason why...

Oh YAY, another 40 vs 9 thread!
It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

There is no subcompact gun that is better in .40 than in 9mm.

For California Magazines the 40 is the slightly superior round because the one of the two advantage the 9mm has over is capacity the 40 beats it in that regard. Also most police department uses the 40SW.

There's still a capacity difference between .40 and 9 in terms of CCW guns.

should of titled this thread pros vs cons and been done with it.

This only applies for compacts or full size where the magazine is limited to 10. Not so in subcompact CCW applications where they don't even have the space for it.

Even in subcompact weapons where the capacity is less than 10? In small guns, you can hold more rounds of 9 than you can of 40 - even in CA.

If we're talking duty weapons, your point may hold some merit.

EDIT: edgalang beat me to it.

Forgot about Sub-Compacts, I alway figured everyone would be carrying a Glock 19/23 for some reason.

My 1st thought is carry what you are comfortable with.

2nd is something I heard that stuck with me. Carry what your local PD or SO carries. Matching the carry ammo does not hurt either. Legal and civil reasons. If you PD carries 9mm hst 124grn +p and you end up in civil court with some POS's family trying to get your money it sounds a lot better to say you defended yourself with the same ammo that PD officers use than some RIP shredder bs that a lawyer can make sound evil to a jury.

The bottom line is that practice and training will give you the best shot at surviving a bad situation. 9mm/40sw/45acp is all academic.
