To summarize Win231's point; keep your booger hook off the bang switch until you're really to shoot something.Glock is an excellent gun, BUT....since it's your first gun & you're new to shooting, extra caution is needed.
As you've probably noticed while handling a Glock, the trigger is rather light & there is no manual safety. Unlike a Double-Action revolver, a Glock's trigger is around 5.5 lbs. D.A. revolvers are usually 10-13 lbs. Therefore, trigger discipline must be a habit - finger outside the trigger guard unless actually shooting; that includes checking out a noise in the house as well as at the range. And, never shove a Glock with a round chambered into the waistband or pocket without a rigid holster that completely covers the trigger guard. And, care must be taken to ensure no clothing, drawstrings, etc. get into the holster. That has caused messy accidents.
When you read or hear that the Glock has three safeties, they are referring to passive safeties - that prevent the gun from firing if it is dropped. When anything pulls the trigger, all of the passive safeties are deactivated.
If you buy anything because it has "tactical" or "operator" in the name, we probably don't run in the same circles.Comment

Overpriced and it's my favorite glock. Throw on some trijicon HD night sights and you will be set.
If you want a better price call OC guns and have them order you one. It will probably be a little over 500 but they won't rip you off at 600.sigpicComment

I have average sized hands and I find the g17 fits very well. I shot my dad's friends gen 2 pretty decent, I'd like to pick up a gen 4 if I ever move out of state .

As others have said, $599 is too much for a gen 3 glock 17. You will probably be close to $600 total, after taxes and fees.
The Glock 17 is probably the most popular and most sold handgun in the world. There's a reason people buy them. Simply put, they work and they're operation and mechanics are simple. Any range that rents handguns is guaranteed to have a G17 for rent. Rent one before you buy one, just to make sure the grip of it is comfortable for you. The grip is usually the main thing that discourages people from liking glocks. Shoot it. If you like it, buy it. Then spend money on 1,000 rounds and metal pair of sights (basically any other sights besides glock's plastic stock sights.)He who keepeth his mouth, keepeth his life.
