I love my 686 6" and the 7th round would be nice. If it's not for carry I see no disadvantage to the 6".

      I've shot my friend's 4" and 6" models. I've never shot a 2.5".

I ended up getting a 3" via SAE. I figure If I want to shoot a 4 or 6 I can hit up my buddies. Plus, if I decide to get rid of it (not likely) the off-roster model will fetch a premium. Good luck on your hunt!

I'll have to agree with this one too...

OP - The PreLock 586 L-COMP 3" ported 7-shot is also a VERY NICE look if you want something different. Just noticed you're in Florida so you should be GTG...

I went through this same thought process and for a range toy ended up with the 686 SSR 4". Then went with a 586 6" which I like even better than my SSR.

The 6" is perfect for range work as it soaks up the shots a bit better.

As for the 7 vs 6 shots, I went with 6 mostly because of the choice and availability of speed loaders in 6 vs 7.

The is nothing sexier than a 586 in 6" though in my opinion:

(Blatant post of a 6" 586, not mine but just like it )

                  They are all fun. 3",4",6"
                  But.....
If you are going for one, the 4" is the best of all. Balance and manageability with .357 loads are great. The 6" feels a tad nose heavy for a bunch of rounds at the range and the 3" with .357 just isn't as fun.
                  4" covers it all.

Have you considered the 686 SSR, also 4"?

Vote for 686 SSR 4" - It's a hell of a gun. Accurate and very Steampunk look.

2nd on the 6" 586 that you never asked about. Really love that classic look of the blue/wood...

If you're set on stainless, I also say stick with 6" on the standard 686. When people start talking revolvers they naturally assume 6 shooter. Like I said before, classic.

Go find another LGS. I'd prefer a 686 SSR or 686+ Pro Series.

I'm not into the + like my wheel guns the old fashioned way with 6.
So of the list you provided the 4" 686 would be my choice.
But if the + is what you want, that 3" would be a good choice.
Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.

For range 6" 686+ will be great.

Id get the 4 inch six shot 686

                                - The 4 inch BARREL and shorter sight radius will be more challenging at the range and force you to work your skill set harder
                                - The 4 inch 686's seem to sell much faster than the 6 inch guns in the classifieds
                                - Get the six shot instead of the + version. I think that will mean more metal between cartridges for hotter hand loading...??
                                - More convenient barrel length to carry as a camp gun or backup when hunting.
                                - Tradition! you are not using it as a SD weapon so you dont need the extra round so stick with tradition...its a classic look and balance.
