The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria)"

        You've excluded a lot of great guns, but sticking to the rules: $500? Springfield XD9 "Tactical" (5") or a used M&P9. $600-700? CZ75 B, Sig SP2022.

Breaking the rules (1911s and revolvers) a Springfield Armory Mil-Spec, RIA Tactical, or Ruger GP100 can all be found new for under $700.

Now, WTB a fun pistol exclusively for the range, preferably in .40 or 9mm. Don't want any Glocks, 1911s, or revolvers. Also don't want a POS that will cause me problems (remember, this is supposed to be fun). Thinking maybe in the $500-700 range...?

          What might you recommend?

Spend the 500 on ammo and a armed self-defense class.

OP, if you are open to considering a pistol caliber carbine, how about M1 Carbine?

I like that idea. Or a CZ52. You could actually buy both for @$500.

A muzzleloader is always fun. A cap and ball revolver might be fun. I own "a few" handguns and, I really did buy a Hi Point for a fun gun. A mares leg? A Zip pistol? A pepperbox? A pinfire revolver and a kit to reload for it? AK/AR pistol? MAC clone? Of course, there are many other novelty handguns that can be fun range guns too.

Take a look at the Masterpiece Arms MPA30T. They sell a single shot version that is exempt from the roster. If you give MA a call after the purchase they will ship you a 10rd magazine and extended magazine release to convert it to semi auto.

Hogue sells a potato sized grip which makes it palatable for stock rounds. But yeah, the price of the gun is low. How about the ammo? Hmm. $1+ a round.. if you load - about 1/4 that if you ignore amortization of loading equipment.

I have the .44 Mag Super Blackhawk long barrel and I don't find it to have much of a kick due to size and weight of gun.

If you're set on a semi auto, go with a sp 2022. They are so underrated. Otherwise go with a revolver like a 686 or gp100. If you're tired, you can shoot .38 specials. If not, you will have fun shooting .357s'.
