You need to get your firearms history squared away. If you were of gun buying age in 1975, you would have had only two choices...single action or DA/SA. The DA/SA system has been around for over 90 years. They WERE a very successful solution to a problem that did exist... namely being safely ready to fire without the cocked necessity of all the single action pistols around at the time.

It was the striker fired pistol that brought about another and some argue better system.

Under rated: Going to have to agree with Sig 1911. In the past there were a couple problems but current production ones are fantastic. The SA cult on here overlooks them constantly but the fit and finish are superb especially compared to a rattly Colt.
I also think the SA XD is constantly under rated and bashed by the Glock crowd. I carry a Glock at work which I do believe it is a better platform, but XD was my first handgun and took all of my tinkering. Its ugly, sight swaps are a pain and the take down lever is right where my thumb wants to go, but otherwise it has been a great gun.

Over rated: Colt 1911's. Very accurate and I know they are closest to original GI spec but they rattle, have squishy safeties, and are way over priced.
Glocks. Good guns, accurate guns, simple guns. I like this platform and am even switching to it for my general go-to firearms but the cult following and fervor associated with them is not justified.

Over Rated:Colt DA revolvers,CZ Pistols. I own both and they are nice, but not as big of a deal as the Internet makes it seem.

          Under Rated:Buckmark Pistols.

I liked my Taurus tracker, ruger lcr, and ria 1911 for the price point. They were all fun to shoot and reliable.

Nothing else really jumped out at me. I had a sig p220 and the fit and finish were incredible, but I also did pay a lot more than those mentioned above. Cz75 sp01 was also great, but at this point if I wanted another tactical model again it would cost me 1k probably, so I can't classify that as underrated because of the price. Maybe I should just get the safety model.

Underrated - RIA 1911 - Although badmouthed by the 1911 snobs, it's a straight shooter and eats anything I give it. It is what a 1911 was designed to be, a scrapper that will slug it out in the trenches of the battlefield.

Overrated - Kimber 1911 - Although I have two, I think they are over priced.

Great thread OP (xxxx),we sure do need more gun / fun related threads these days. (I do encourage everyone, especially if you haven't, please make a new thread and help us all stay educated and entertained.) And I've actually learned a lot in this first page.

I really would like a uber reliable 1911 but it does seem they have their issues.
                          that's something that I won't put up with I need something that's very reliable,especially in a handgun.

and since everyones already covering the High end stuff, I will cover some of the low end stuff that I've had experience with personally.

under rated: a lot of the older AMERICAN MADE low cost but not low quality (.22 and other calibers, I personally stay away from the harder to get calibers.) revolvers from back in the day with names like Harrington and Richard, Iver Johnson, and house name brands (Sears, Great Western and Montgomery Wards...etc. )they may have fewer features, but back then at least they were built to last.

over rated: a lot of the smaller semi-auto inexpensive guns, both foreign or domestic.
you think you're getting a good deal for $70 New, like a Jennings j-22 in the 1980s, but as I seen personally the die cast zinc pistols are not made to last.
Some of the lower name brands were really just about selling pistols and not building anything reliable or that would last at all.

sure you can keep them running but it's a constant game where if you fix an old American made revolver even once it usually good for a long long time without any more work into it. That goes for the second tier not top shelf guns as well.

These are just my personal experiences your mileage may vary.

The 1911, Browning Hi Power or S&W Model 59 (all of which had one consistent trigger pull) were all "safely" carried by military and civilians long before the Sig Sauer DA/SA. If your argument is that these examples could't be carried safely in condition 1 than yes, the DA/SA system was indeed a solution to a problem.

                              Another HIGHLY underrated pistol:

Any HIGH POINT. They've been pretty decent of late. Just looks like a cordless drill. But works and is super cheap.

HK pistols. Good little pistols but not really what people make them out to be. Who remembers the fat boy MK23. Navy SEAL pistol chosen by operators operationally operating in operations all around the world. Lol that's just one example. There are a few.

Imo HK pistols are overrated as a whole. Their 45c (which I do own) and P30 (which I unf do not) are very nice if setup as a light lem
