Springer if you are going to customize it. Colt if you can leave well enough alone.

Might help you to do a little reading.

      The amory:
For nearly two centuries, the U.S. Armed Forces and American industry looked to Springfield Armory for innovative engineering and superior firearms. Springfield Armory National Historic Site commemorates the critical role of the nation’s first armory by preserving and interpreting the world's largest historic US military small arms collection, along with historic archives, buildings and landscape.

      The commercial gun maker:

VegasND is 100% correct. The Springfield Armory of today has nothing to do with the government armory of the past. They certainly did not participate in the world wars.

        Colt is not colt.

Colt is just a firearm. Only guys who think Colt is a foot are the guys who own a colt, but know their worth so wont pay more than its worse. They just say that to make their gun better than everyone else's in discussions.

Springfield lifetime warranty and almost no questions asked CS is top notch.

I have no idea what you are trying to say.

To the OP, go with the one you think looks better since they will both be good guns with a good warranty in case you get one that needs work.

              Posting on calguns drunk. Nice.

Flip a coin OP, both are AMERICAN firearms companies so you cant go wrong. Had you asked if you should get a Rock Island vs. COLT it would've been an easier question to answer.

I've seen and owned Colts that doesn't deserve the price nor the name. I've seen but never owned a few of those beautiful Colts circa early 1960s and those really made my heart palpitate.

OP, its a toss up. Whatever brand you settle on, this I can advise from experience with those two brands of 1911s: Don't buy sight unseen.

I've seen plenty of the newer made RIAs that would put either Colt or SA to shame in terms of craftsmanship(finish and fitting).

Springfield Armory Inc. shares nothing with the Federal government's Springfield Armory aside from the name and crossed cannons.

SA Inc. was never part of any of those old wars, the only military involvement SA Inc. has is supplying parts for the EBR and MEUSOC 1911 AFAIK.

OP, go with Colt. Unless you bite the bullet and accept front serrations then SA Inc. doesn't offer any models that lack those serrations and have their assembly and finishing done in the U.S. Too bad though, I have one of their MC Operators and it's never failed to impress.

Springfield, the armory that was a part of the federal government had a long and distinguished history in the development of firearms as well as coordinating the shipment of most small arms during the wars.

Springfield Armory, the commercial company that sells handguns today has nothing to do with the government arsenal other than paying for the rights to use the name.

Saying that today's Springfield Armory has an association with the arsenal is like saying that Rock Island Armory (makers of cheap 1911s from the phillipines) is associated with Rock Island Arsenal which is another government facility that also participated in the wars.

and no, I'm not saying that a 1911 has to be a Colt. Actually I like both of the guns that the OP is considering -- Colt and Springfield. they are both really good guns. Colt has a reputation (deservedly so) of being subpar because of the quality of their guns from the 80s and 90s. However recent manufacture guns (within the last few years) are of very high quality.

SA now produces all their 1911s in the USA...

Awwwwcmon, 7008guns, don't be like that. Read up the thread, there are several responders who are saying what you are saying.

There is no quarrel here, just people with strong opinions, and definitely you can hold your own. Imagine a big round table where there are boisterous people exchanging opinions, some are louder than others, but everyone is just having fun, that's how this thread is.
