I'd shoot both Gen's first if you could. What might work for some, might not work for others.

S&W M&P has a harder/longer pull with a longer reset. There's a lot more to it than just back straps. Back straps are a nice perk, but I'd rather go without them and have a Glock than get something else. But to each their own.

Upgrade to warren/sevigny's if you prefer the F/O front and square-notch rear... or Trijicon HD's if you prefer the U-notch rear and night-sight capability.

Neither appeal to me more than a Glock (regardless of price or generation). That said I would not mind having the bottom one in my collection. Would not be the first gun I picked up if I heard a thump in the middle of the night, but it is a damn fine firearm and would be fun addition to my other range toys in the safe. I've enjoyed my few experiences with the Sig 226 (and similar action Sigs) and I shoot them well, just not as well as a Glock. Of all the DA/SAs out there I find them the least objectionable. Not really a CZ fan. Give it time, however, and they'll eventually come out with something that truly floats my boat. Maybe they have and I just haven't tried it yet. The ones I have tried didn't do it for me. But I am glad they did it for you. Different strokes for different folks.

I find it especially noticeable on the sub-compacts, where you're working with less real estate to begin with. That 1mm smaller grip isn't much,
but you can definitely feel it. Of course, that means you can't use the beavertail backstrap, which is fun to experiment with too...

Ameriglo Spartans give you a square notch rear with tritium inserts and the cool orange (or yellow) circle around the front tritium post that you find with the HDs. I run them on my G26 and like them a lot. That said, unless is an HD gun the stock sights work great once you get used to them.

                    This!

I'll second the Ameriglo Spartans. I have them on my G26 as well and they're awesome! Front sight acquisition is extremely fast. Plus, they cost less than the Trijicon HDs.

While some people like and use the stock sights, there are better replacements out there.

Look at Warren/Dawson/10-8/Ameriglo for the biggest range/selection of sight types.

Trijicon HD's are nice but pricey choice if you like tritium sights.

If you want black/black sights, the low cost Defoor's from Ameriglo are a worthy choice.

Another option is the Procter Y-sights. They only come in black rear/FO front but they are becoming an Internet favorite. Have some to test myself.

                      Superset's video review of Proctor's sights: https://youtu.be/r-HEJjSiOl4

Also another set, especially if you are competition oriented are Taran Butler's TTI Glock sight set. Again only in black/FO combination.

My choice for best all around is a black rear with a FO front.

Have fun with your new G17.4!

If I could buy a Gen 4 for the same price as people outside California, I would have got one instead of a gen 3. The slightly higher price of the Gen 4 is offset by the extra magazine they include.

I really like 10-8 rear sights but I don't like their FO front sights. The fiber sits too low in the sight which makes them harder to use at speed (your eyes want to aim with the fiber and not the top of the sight).

I really like the Taran tactical front sight because the fiber sits high. The Warren FO front sights are good this way too. Very few of my guns still have night sights.

I prefer Gen 4. That being said, with Gen 4 pricing right now, get the Gen 3. If you get the Gen 3, I'd recommend the Glock extended mag release button for something like $3 though. If you want a better grip on the Gen 3 gun, either stipple it or use grip tape. As far as sights, I'm also a fan of Ameriglo Spartans in Orange/Green front with Yellow rear.
