Beretta 92FS/M9, Why the hate?

I feel the same way. I've tried other pistols, I just shoot the beretta so much better, I got rid of my others. Nice grouping, I get those same groups.#blackriflesmatter
<4 years till retirement, can't wait to leave this state
California, where all of the good stuff is banned, registered, regulated or prohibited, yay.....
Law abiding firearm owners have no chance in this state.

I like my M9a1 but its far from my favorite pistol. I've upgrades some parts to cure some of its ills. The trigger pull out of the box is terrible and you really need a D spring, I use reduced power D spring and reduced power trigger spring from Wolff. Alum grips from Beretta to reduce the grip size a bit, short reach trigger, elite II hammer and Wilson combat rear sight. I had a 92FS in the 90's and still have a bundle of magazines so it's capacity is standard for me. Mine shoots straight as a laser if I do my part.
Things that I still don't like about it, the frame mounted safety and front sight that can't be replaced. My .02Comment

Arguable. I don't really notice any big difference in recoil between the three 9mm's I've shot the most: My old 92FS, my full-size P320, or my friend's P226. I do feel like the P226 has a much easier DA pull than the 92FS (even with a D-spring), simply because I didn't have to reach out as far with my finger for it.Comment

Hardly a surprise, given the general military treatment of handguns.
The hate on the M9 comes from two places.
One, it was designed in the 1970s when the typical gun owner got their start with DA revolvers before moving onto semi-autos. That was part of how the Beretta became so popular-police agencies which issued revolvers could transition troops used to heavy triggers into semi-autos easily.
Now the typical shooter starts off with a semi auto Glock or similar gun with a 5lb or less constant pull. So the 10lb+ starting weight is now a training liability instead of an asset like it was when cops carried Model 66 revolvers.New shooters basically need to budget 500 rounds of practice ammo to shoot in double action with the cost of the pistol .
Two, the military adpoted the gun-which forever sealed its fate as "the pile of Italian junk". The DoD just doesnt use or maintain pistols the way civilian users do.Cops are responsible for their issued gun, so they've got a vested interest in maintaining it properly. Same for a citizen who just laid out $650 George Washingtons for a Beretta.
A military troop ,however, is handed a random pistol off a rack without much in the way of personal attachment. Add in the sad fact that citizens with a CCW class get more handgun time then most military support troops , and its a recipe for abused handguns. After 20+ years of that, its little wonder most military issue M9s are garbage.
So, you get vets who are handed second rate piles of crap which looks like a Beretta. Guess what they say to their gun-loving pals back home upon rotating stateside?
The personally owned 92FS I have has chugged along nicely with zero stoppages so far in over 1000 rounds of use. The military issue M9 I handled was in so horrid a shape it wasnt even fit for boat anchor duty. The piece was so worn out you could drop the locked back slide by just tilting the gun forward .
So we now have thousands of OIF and Afghan war vets who are convinced a Roman spear is a better choice of sidearm then the Beretta 92 ,on top of ordinary people who figure budeting $150 in ammo to learn the trigger is a bum deal compared to buying a Glock, XD, etc.Yeah there's enough M9 Haterade to fill a tanker truck.Comment

The thing about it is that only one out of every 11 shots is going to be in DA, assuming a 10+1 capacity. The rest are SA, and out of all the wonder-nine service pistols I've tried, my 92G has the best SA pull. CZ-75? Way too much creep, any CZ owner can attest to that. Sig Mk25? Mushier than a bowl of mashed potatoes. USP? Still mashed potatoes. Beretta 92? Crisp with almost zero creep. Almost reminiscent of a 1911. Almost.Arguable. I don't really notice any big difference in recoil between the three 9mm's I've shot the most: My old 92FS, my full-size P320, or my friend's P226. I do feel like the P226 has a much easier DA pull than the 92FS (even with a D-spring), simply because I didn't have to reach out as far with my finger for it.
Just figured I'd throw that out since we're all tossing around "I think" and "I feel" here.

The only documented cases of frames cracking were when the soldier had to use the M9 to beat a charging Afghani to death with it like a club.... after all, the 9mm round is so weak they routinely empty full magazines into enemy's chests and don't even slow them down. Most people online, friends and shooters at the range have one thing in common, they all claim to dislike the Beretta 92FS/M9 pistol.
My M9 is my favorite pistol that I own, mainly because it's comfortable in my hands, I like the sighting system and I'm fairly accurate with it. When I ask others why they dislike the pistol, most of the time I don't get a straight answer; more along the lines of, "My brother in the law said he saw the frame crack on one during his tour in Afghanistan." or, "I've read that they're unreliable, but I haven't shot one."
What's your opinion?
The reason people hate the M9 is because it replaced the Colt .45.Comment

On gun forums, M9 bashing is the most common theme I have ever seen.
One example that was at the top of the search engine list:
And they never pass up a chance to regurgitate the incident where the old design 92 cracked the slide and it hit a Navy SEAL. Beretta USA claimed they were feeding it super hot war surplus machine gun ammo in an attempt to force it to fail (SEALs denied) and Beretta Italy claimed Beretta USA was using a type of steel that was too brittle that led to slide fracture (they denied).Last edited by bountyhunter; 03-23-2015, 12:39 AM.Comment

Any story on the Sig? That made me cry even more than the 1911s.
To the other poster, I see what you're saying about the triggers, but the stock Beretta triggers are nothing short of pathetic. At least the newer ones.

I thought it was a funny looking gun, but now that I own one, I really like it. I think it was one of the best follow up shot triggers out there.

You've got to relize by now people like to complain. Most of the time complaints are unfounded. You heard people complain about the Beretta howbout the Glock ? The way I see it is more excellent guns for me and heck with the complainers.Comment

I jailed a 92FS, pickup day is this Wednesday. I like my other Beretta, a PX4 in 40. I needed another 9mm, the other 9 is a Sig 226 MK 25 which I like as well. With the MK25 I installed a SIG SRT trigger mod which helped it a lot. I also have a CZ 75BSA in 40.
There was recent article in SGN about 9 vs. 40. In it the author claims the 40 is going to be dead soon as law enforcement changes back to 9mm. He claims this because the ammunition for 9mm has improved to the point that the extra fire power from the 40 is no longer needed. The fact that a follow up shot can come more quickly from a 9 than a 40 overrides the extra fire power. I still like my 40's.I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...
