PIMP stands for Positive Intellectual Motivated Person
When pimping begins, friendship ends.
Don't let your history be a mystery -
I paid $550.00 in August 2013 for a cherry condition 686-4 in 4" and I knew it was a steal when all the counter people at BPS try to offer more to the seller behind my back while I was doing a ppt. That was a friends deal for that price. In CA, I would guess a good condition 4" pre-lock 686 would be in the 600-750 range. I would NEVER sell this baby. It has become my favorite gun and crazy accurate.

$800 is a fair price. Anything less would be sold quick on the market place. I have an unfired 686+ dash 5 6" I bought from a friend for $700. I also have a square butt 686 no dash "M" I received in a trade. Both very nice pieces that have not shot and are safe queens because I actually prefer to just shoot a post-lock 686+ dash 6 5" with a half underlug. Such a smooth trigger. I think anything less than $700 would be a steel for a pre-lock 686 in good or excellent condition, especially a 7 shot Plus model.Comment

I think your on to something here. I saw a early 686 go for around $900, hahahahaha, really people. I'm also seeing Smith semi- autos selling at record highs here on the boards., glad I'm not in the market.USS ZELLARS

686-4 or earlier in 90% condition under 800?
if anyone knows where to get them I'll take a dozen but, would settle for just one nice example. Would be happy to even pay more.
Been looking since January.
Either they are to far away for ftf transfer or I'm too slow.Comment

I believe a very similar 686 thread was posted not more than three days ago. Good condition, pre-lock, pre-mim, California 686's tend to fetch $800 +

When you open the cylinder, it will have the model number stamped. 686- #. The dash numbers are engineering changes. -4 is probably most desirable because it's the last 686 before S&W changed to MIM parts and the frame mounted firing pin.
Your hammer looks like a -5. That is still a great gunNever initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

One thing to consider in any 586,686 older model (no dash and early -1"s)
is that there was a recall by S&W on them. They would possibly lock up with hotter 357 ammo.
The guns fixed by the factory have a (M) stamped on the cylinder crane.Comment

Thanks, I'll have to open it up when I get home. When you open the cylinder, it will have the model number stamped. 686- #. The dash numbers are engineering changes. -4 is probably most desirable because it's the last 686 before S&W changed to MIM parts and the frame mounted firing pin.

edit:
Mine says 686 -5

I took photos of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd edition to capture the values of 686 and 586, per the catalog. See below.
Of course this does not factor in the premium due to a gun being off-roster, as well as the dashes (no dash, -1, etc.)
Hope this helps.

586
