    (Update) Exploding Handgun

Ok I'm back with a Update-So I went to the gun range and spoke to the Manager range master, handed him my pistol. He took a look, then went to the small work shop and proceeded to try and remove the spent casing. After he removed the casing and did an inspection he then stated that is was not the reload ammo. Which to me is BS...I shot there ammo I told him. He told me to send the firearm back to Springfield, to see what they think...Then he told me that they will make it right, as they should...I didn't stop there I went to the owners office to find out he was out of town until monday. I really like the staff at (LAX Range) and I really hope they do the right thing

So this is the aftermath of my exploded handgun, so any thoughts on what might have caused this issue

Definitely looks like a squib now... Bullet stopped midway down the tube, next bullet smacked it.

I'm wondering what the chances are of a positive outcome. Springfield's warranty doesn't cover damage stemming from reloaded ammo which you are contending is the cause. LAX is saying it wasn't due to their ammo.

Did LAX tell you what they intend to do to "make it right" if Springfield doesn't do anything?

I'm curious how they know if the case was reloaded or not?

                Exactly.
The barrel splitting lengthwise like a banana peel is typical when this happens.
The split started at the bulge.

                This one's not on Springfield.
LAX owes you a new barrel and install costs if you were shooting their reloaded ammo.
Of course, they will say you should have known that the bullet didn't exit the barrel and you should have checked before firing another round.

yea that looks like a squib. if it was an over charge, most of the damage would be at the base of the barrel and mag well area. make sure you take lots of pics and video before you send it to springfield. good luck

That is most likely from an obstructed barrel: Lodged bullet from squib.

It could also be from a defective barrel, but then the brass wouldn't be damaged. Is the brass damaged? If the material has a flaw in it, it could make it weaker. I have seen voids and flaws in billet/bars of material, but it is more common in parst that are cast.

What's the cost of a new barrel? I highly doubt Springfield will participate unless you can convince them to sell you a new barrel at say dealer cost...

Its more than just a barrel. Frame is toast. Check out his other thread.

Everything is damaged even if it doesn't look like it. He/she might be able to salvage the striker and sights.

We all know that big name brand new ammo is expensive.
For most of us that means we can't afford to shoot enough to get good.
So we buy commercially reloaded ammo and hope for the best.
Back in the day I did the same thing.
But eventually I saw enough problems with reloaded ammo that I decided to reload my own to insure higher quality and reliability.
It's an investment of time and money, but a new barrel and gunsmith install will cost about as much as a basic reloading set-up.
