CCW - help choose 3rd gun

If you really need a good advice, I should say select the best caliber you want for your CCW, then choose two pistol with the same caliber and would take same mag, the 3rd one can be a airlite (5) shot revolver which will serve as back up.

As mentioned previously, I also would not recommend mixing different operational weapons on your permit. Training for a manual safety on one of your weapons and not the others can mess you up when the chips are down. You'll have to remember which weapon you have on you and how to operate that particular weapon - which could cause hesitation. Where split seconds count it could be the difference between life and death.

If you want a .45, I would consider the Glock 30S if you want a Glock 19 sized weapon. If you want something thinner, consider the Glock 36.

If you don't mind a 9mm, the Kahr PM9 would be a little bigger than your Glock 42, but packs more of a punch. The trigger feel is different than your XD or G42 though.

If you decide on a Glock 30S, your path to get one without SSE available anymore will cost more. You can wait to find one available for sale PPT and probably pay a stiff premium - or you have to buy a G29SF or G30SF. Then you have to buy a Glock 30S complete slide assembly to install on your frame. Presto-chango, now you have a G30S. So it'll cost you about $350 more than before SSE ended to go that route. Another benefit if you choose the G29SF, is you now have a 10mm Glock in addition to your .45 Glock.

Depends on your body type. Bigger guys can conceal bigger guns. Skinny guys are gonna have a hard time concealing anything.

5' 11" sub 150 lbs with a 30" waist. I carry a fullsize 1911 with leather IWB under a button up collard shirt no problem at 3:30.

I would also suggest the OP NOT carry a manual safety/hammer fired gun if he's only used to striker fired no safety guns.

Micro 1911s never appealed to me. Sure they are cool and look nice but from my research they aren't as reliable as full size 1911 and also come with the additional downsides of carrying a 1911. IE a safety, heavy, limited capacity etc. I don't think is trust any micro 1911

Glock 36 would stick with your current manual of arms, make it easier. I know you want a 45, also I am ignorant if the size of a glock 42. I was going to point out everybody needs a pocket gun on their ccw. A gun for when you're not carrying a gun.

^^^ This. I frequently pocket carry my 442 when I can't carry my semi auto carry guns because of their size or my activity at the time.

With experience shooting 1911's and playing 'gun games'.... the safety is a non issue for people that have used the platform for a while.

For me, I form my grip with my thumb high on the slide, and when I push out to target, the thumb drops- sweeping the safety off and riding the safe with my thumb. It's a natural part of my grip forming process- completely natural and ingrained.

My sig upsets me to no end since those idiots put the slide catch right where my strong thumb sits.... and the slide wont lock open on empty....

Consider that you might want to put a gun or two on that you wouldn't necessarily conceal on your person, but might keep unsecured in your car or thrown into a backpack. Not every CCW gun needs to be carried on your person, and you wouldn't want to run afoul of the law for not securing a gun not on your permit.

^ This sounds good. Maybe a full size .45 for car or hiking purposes.

I carry a Kimber Ultra from time to time. The gun is stone reliable and it shoots better than it seems possible. I have had some quality issues with it though and thus, it sits in the safe more now than not. I think the 1911 micros are fantastic carry guns. They are small, thin and lightweight. The platform can be cranky though, and they certainly are going to be different to shoot vs what you have now, as others have pointed out. The other downside is the price tag.

I sure is a looker though.

I have a "Goldilocks" way of doing it.. ie, small-medium-large

So

Ruger LCP 380
Shield 9mm
Glock 17 (because I have standard caps)

Maybe something SMALL.. sure the G42 is 380.. but it's a big 380..

Since you have a lot of .45.. how about finding an XDs 3.3 in .45?

Another vote for the 30S. The best compact Glock made IMHO and I have a 19, 23 and 27.

You've got 380 and full sized 40 covered so yes 45 makes sense. If you want a 1911 style pistol I suggest a 4" Kimber Compact CDP or a Colt Combat Commander instead.
