Lesson learned

I was rear ended today, and it happened to be the day I decided not to carry my gun. PD showed up, asked for my Driver's licence and as I opened my wallet, the officer saw my CC permit, and he proceeded to ask if I was carrying. I knew he had the chance to see my CC permit because I was not careful enough and I ended up pulling both at the sametime. I said I wasn't carrying because I "thought" I would not need it (Big mistake)the officer said to me" I prefer guys that carry every day because they make feel safe" he laugh and continue his investigation.

After my license and all the info was given to me, the same officer came to me shook my hand and said" carry that damn weapon, you will make me feel a lot safe it you do" I said I will, and I thank the officer.

I don't know if it would have been different if I had the weapon on me , but he sounded honest and at the same time disappointed that I wasn't carrying.
All this took place in Sacramento. I feel more confident carrying my weapon every day all thanks to the officer.

I admit to be a bit afraid when i carry because I'm Hispanic and most of the places think Hispanics are drug dealers or thugs.

Great interaction but shame on you for not carrying!

I thing it would have been a similar interaction if you were carrying. Don't let your ethnicity shame you into NOT carrying. Let fools be stereotypical and know that you are above all that petty garbage.

Interesting story, thanks for sharing. You obviously didn't fit the profile of the kind of person he worries about being armed which is never a bad thing. Probably should keep your CCW apart from your license for reasons like this but at least you found an officer who was respectful about your rights.

Why do you think it would have been different if the LEO told you he liked it when "good guys/gals" are carrying??? And yes, carry whenever/wherever it is legal/prudent to do so (IE, I don't carry if I am going to a beach to go swimming or something by myself.. or If I were to meet the President of the United States... or boarding an airliner).

Don't make the mistake of carrying only when you think you need it. You'll never know when you'll need it.

If you knew you might need it the prudent course is to not go there. Carry as often as you can. Make it a habit.

As for being Hispanic, since your carrying concealed no one knows. If you have a law enforcement encounter that does not involve the use of force, the first time they know is when you tell them, and hand them your permit. Thugs don't get permits. Your not a thug, your a responsibly armed American.

Hopefully you have a locking safe in your car for those times you can't take a gun into someplace with you.

Do you dress or look like a drug dealer or thug? If not, then I wouldn't worry about it and be proud of the ability you have to carry since so many currently do not.

I hope you realize the irony of sterotyping others by stating they sterotype you.

On a different note, I try not to guess when I will need a firearm and sincerely hope that you get out of that habbit. I know it can be a little overwhelming when you start to carry, but make sure you dress around your pistol and you won't have to worry about others seeing your pistol.

When someone comes up with a way to know when and where you'd actually need a gun, then I'll know when I need to carry, and better yet where not to be at a certain time. Until then, always carry.

Pretty much everyone who gets robbed, mugged, killed, etc. says the same thing... "I never thought it would happen to me." You never know when you'll need it, so to me it would be prudent to always carry wherever legal.

Maybe I'm just weird, but what's the point of having a CCW if you don't carry? I thought the whole point was, like car insurance, to have it and not need it instead of needing it and not having it. Barring, of course, those places that are mandatory disarmament zones.

Trust me, I being kicking my own *** all weekend long for the mistake I made. I will carry everyday and I have the safe is in the car just in case I have to take care of business in places where not allow to carry.

Nothing makes me scratch my head more than someone who has jumped through all of the hoops, paid the fees, dealt with all of the scrutiny and BS involved in getting the permit and then they decide not to carry.

Seriously? WTH? You should carry everywhere you can legally take your weapon. EVERYWHERE. Every day.

And along the same lines as the OP I had a similar statement from LEO. Mine was from one of the LEO who man the CCW office for my IA. I went by their office to give them a FTF report of a road rage incident where I was chased down and cornered by two people in a truck. I had to draw my weapon when I felt my life and limb were threatened. When I had finished my report we were talking about some other incidents that some other LTCers had reported. They were telling me that >90% of incidents of weapons drawn involved drunk road ragers. One of them told me "I wish more citizens were carrying pistolas."
