Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets attention. I bet if many of us called say every 2 weeks and politely asked for an update that they'll get tired of answering the same question. After all, they dragged their feet (and the sheriff padding her wallet) for decades so time for them to shift some resources for a few months. I'm more afraid of another law or politician playing games and throwing out all our applications.

So I stopped by the sheriffs office today. The deputy at the desk would not connect me to or contact Sergeant Davis. Asked me if my visit was about CCW and I said yes that I’m looking for an update since I haven’t heard anything in nearly 2 months. He reiterated what a poster above said that they are extremely backlogged and there’s nothing they could do about it other than to just wait. He told me to call the phone line, and then we both had a good laugh together at the fact that the voicemail box has been full all year.

The conclusion is this. Either sit tight and wait with no idea what is going on or hire an attorney to pursue the sheriffs department.

    Just thinking out loud,
I wonder what and how long it would take if the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office (SCCSO) dedicated personnel (and how many would it take) to totally work through whatever backlog there is? Perhaps set a goal to reduce the wait time to something like exactly 90 days from actual complete application submission.

Secondarily, I wonder how much it would cost. No question mark, rhetorical statement as I'm thinking out loud.

I've seen some posts here which I'd have to assume were still referring to Santa Clara County as that's where this thread is located in Calguns' sub-forums. Santa Clara County probably should be referred to as SCC, rather than SC, along with SCCSO (for its Sheriff's Office), but not to be confused with Santa Cruz County as it has the same initials.

SC alone, could pertain to Sacramento, Sierra, Siskiyou, or Stanislaus Counties.

Even more potentially confusing (at least to me) is just saying "Santa Clara" as this is also a city within Santa Clara County. In some locales, an individual city may be issuing CCW permits, too.

Lastly of note, in California, the counties will each have a Sheriff's Office or sometimes called a Sheriff's Department. Cities and some other government entities would typically have a Police Department (PD), if the city even has its own PD.

There are some weird other uses out there but I don't believe they're in the CCW business, such as BART Police, or Sunnyvale which uses "Department of Public Safety" instead.

There was a post in this thread which used SCPD and could only assume it referred to Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, but could have been Santa Clara Police Department. Perhaps spell out the complete IA name in one's post once, then going to an abbreviation from then on.

Not a rant, just an FYI. This Calif. CCW stuff gets quite confusing.

I'm sorry psych tests are involved; personal interviews are involved; and firearms restrictions exist along with the firearms needing to be registered to the applicant, among other things. All this doesn't exist for "the right to vote" (not expressly stated in the Constitution, btw); and doesn't always exist in some other states' CCWs; or the privilege to drive. WTH!

Imagine this, "You can't vote until you have a permit to vote; pass a psych test; pass a background test (might be a felon)".
You can't be issued a driver's license because you don't own a vehicle (not registered in your name), and the vehicle has non-Calif.-legal equipment on it (certain windows tinted, unsafe).

What a hot mess. Glad to hear a handful of early-applicants have finally gotten an actual hardcopy permit in their hands though. Now for the rest of us......

Maybe I should just plan to check this thread again in early 2024 at the going rate. From what has been discussed, the 90-day legal requirement doesn't apply since the esteemed Sheriff is gaming the fine print?

I tried calling to main number and got to a live person. He said he could not transfer me to Sgt. Davis, but that he is extremely backlogged and they are short staffed. Whatever 'estimates' we got, he said to tack on a few months to it...

And the best way to get a response is to email... even though I've sent plenty with no responses...

More research proves that the fox is guarding the henhouse. From the DOJ website under the Livescan information is this:

An applicant may otherwise request a status of their fingerprint background check only with the agency that requested their background check.

Many of us are getting close to the Sheriff's timelines for approval / denial in their own policy. Once you read this you will understand why so many of us show our Livescan's being complete on the DOJ website but the Sheriff not acknowledging receipt. I believe the Sheriff is intentionally failing to acknowledge the Livescans as that is what forces their hand to get moving or risk a lawsuit by hundreds of us.

Here is the excerpt from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's CCW policy 207.4 (i):

    (i) Issuance or Denial of Application: The Sheriff or designee shall give written
notice to the applicant indicating if the license is approved or denied. The licensing
authority shall give this notice within 90 days of the initial application for a new
license or a license renewal, or 30 days after receipt of the applicant's criminal
background check from the Department of Justice, whichever is later.
    If the license
is denied, the notice shall state which requirement was not satisfied.
An option for us to push back on their incompetence or outright continued tyranny would be to find a way to prove that Livescan results have been sent to them. Anyone know a way to do this? I wonder if the DOJ would answer that question?

Here is a link to the policy I referenced:

    Yup!

Three months, and our names haven't been passed on to the Psych Eval agency yet (I confirmed with the agency).

I've emailed a few times, no response. Likely going to a black hole just like all your voicemails.

Try calling the main phone number and work your way through the phone prompt system to reach the Day Desk deputy.

Then ask for Sgt Russell Davis.

Same here GreenLantern, also it doesn?t help that their phone goes straight to a full voicemail. I was thinking about following up with them in person, maybe that will get an answer

The main issue is the silence, and lack of updates in Permitium.

I thought it was meant to increase transparency so we know where we stand. I don't even know if my application is forgotten or not after my initial interview (which went well).

And the psych eval people never heard of me, so I'm not even on their "list yet" - three months later.

I think all the folks that posted on this thread about not having a CCW in hand- should just get together and hire a fire & brimstone/scorched earth attorney and start raising hell. Wringing one's hands endlessly on CG isn't going to do jack.

    After doing the LiveScan:
    1. Wait for them to receive and review the results. If you pass, you'll get an email from Permitium titled "SCSO - Training Required" instructing you to complete and submit the training certificate within 90 days.
    2. Do the training and upload the training certificate to Permitium. You don't need to try emailing or calling after doing so.
    3. Once they review and approve your training (took a couple of days for me), you'll get another email from Permitium titled "SCSO - Your CCW Application Has Been Approved". You will need to log onto Permitium and pay a $271.96 fee via credit card ($264 goes to SCSO + $7.96 Permitium processing fee).
    4. After submitting payment, you'll get an email immediately titled "SCSO - CCW Application Final Payment Received" instructing you to email them to schedule an appointment for pickup.
    5. I got a response back a few days later saying they'll reach out to schedule a pickup date within 2 weeks and you don't need to bring anything other than a CA Driver's License to the pickup appointment.
