That should be the least of your worries. You should wait until you get approved then look for the classes. No point in wasting money and time for the classes so early in the process.

We should all do the CCW class in a group if we get similar timed appointments, it'd be amusing.

I was coming to this thread with the exact same question. Then I realized that nobody in Santa Clara County gets CCW permits, so thus far there has been no market for a class like this in the area. Reeds seems like the obvious location since they already offer handgun classes, but it looks like they don't currently offer anything specifically for CCW. Hopefully that will change soon.

I wonder if the Frontsight 4-day defensive handgun class will meet the Santa Clara County training requirement?

Look at the application - section 7 (which includes the good cause statement) must be completed during your interview. At this point all you are filing out is the first few sections - name, wasn't dishonably discharged, not in legal trouble, what weapons (including serial numbers) do you want on the permit, etc.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will. I believe this is why Frontsight offers CCW specific classes separate from the defensive handgun classes.

Unless the SCC officials have "approved" FrontSight as one of their trainers, it won't fulfill the requirement.

CA has no defined state requirement on what the training must actually entail other than <16 hours... the rest is at the discretion of the IA. From the application form itself:

                  Training Required
Penal Code sections 26150 and 26155 specify that new license applicants must complete a course of training. The training may consist of any course acceptable to the licensing authority. The licensing authority may require either a course not to exceed 16 hours which includes instruction on at least firearms safety and the law regarding the permissible use of a firearm, or a community college course not to exceed 24 hours certified by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. If the licensing authority requires the community college course, it must be uniformly required for all CCW license applicants. The licensing authority may also require annual qualification on the weapon(s) during the term for which the CCW license is granted.
My understanding is that SCC requires live-fire qualification (course of fire unknown) with all firearms listed on your LTC.

Still trying to dredge up more info on this aspect of the LTC process since it is well-hidden, apparently... next time I'm at Reed's, I'll see if I can talk to Rick about any potential plans for them to gain approval for SCC training.

I am trying to find one. Also checking with my usual trainers to see if they are going to put together a class now.

There are a handful (more than 12 less than 100) LTC/CCW permit holders in Santa Clara Co now. They must have gotten their training from somewhere.

This is correct, and it has recently changed - previous course of fire that took place at the Sheriff's Range in the hills above the Metcalf range used to be relatively easy:

5 rounds in 30 seconds at 20 yards
5 rounds in 20 seconds at 15 yards - reload repeat
5 rounds in 10 seconds at 7 yards - reload repeat
5 rounds in 5 seconds at 3 yards

                        Total of 30 rounds fired.

                        Now it's even easier:

5 rounds in 30 seconds at 15 yards
5 rounds in 15 seconds at 7 yards
5 rounds in 5 seconds at 3 yards

                        Total of 15 rounds fired.

Target is a standard B27 silhouette and 80% of your rounds must be in the 8 ring.

Sheriff's RO requires you to wear SBA which they provide. They also require you to draw from a holster (no pocket carry, no 'draw clips', etc) and they have a caliber floor of .380 - nothing smaller than that.
AND the Sheriff's RO/RM that inspects the firearms to verify safety, serial #, etc. will disqualify a handgun they feel is unsafe. Example: Glocks with 3.5# triggers, match triggers on 1911s, etc.

Oh and you shoot rain or shine.

On the Santa Clara CCW application should the witness signature be completed prior to mailing?

I *believe* that you sign that portion when you pick up your LTC at the Sheriff's admin office.
