I did contact that author almost a year ago when my 90 day was approaching, he was happy to listen and he did a follow up article shortly after.

They must be getting stricter, my references were never contacted, my interview with deputy was a quick and easy phone call, and the shrink got me in quickly after I was referred to him. Who did you interview with? Strange, West, or Van Doreen? Or someone else?
I wrote a very generic statement attesting to my sound judgment and good moral character which mirror the sheriff's arbitrary and capricious requirement of "good moral character" for CCW applicants. I sent that note to my references and they all signed and returned an identical statement. They all live in constitutional carry states or are authorized to carry as active law enforcement. I have great respect for their time and did not want to ask them to write drawn out love letters answering ambiguous, unconstitutional sheriff requirements. The letters were not satisfactory for the sheriff's office.

The investigator contacted me and asked me to have the references provide further information. I CC'd all of them on email and requested the detective contact them directly for any additional information, which he did.

This all occurred within the last month or two. It likely has added ~4+ weeks to my application that's at 54 weeks and counting. The investigator is detective Ashley. He was cordial and apologetic about the extended duration and offered some valuable insights on the therapist's attitude but did not provide any explanation for the delayed processing.

One interesting note is that the therapist can shut down an application and then not disclose a reason to the sheriff due to medical privacy. Another interesting note is the detective questioned me on marijuana usage. As a substance that's legal in CA and other states but federally prohibited, it sounded like that would be a disqualifier. It's interesting that they want to follow federal guidance that's a barrier to CCW but ignore federal guidance that enables CCW.

Made it through to psychologist. He left me a voicemail on 9/15. I have called back and left 2 voicemails with him since. No luck getting an appointment scheduled. Maybe I need to start calling every day or multiple times per day until somebody answers.

Finally got scheduled with the psychologist. He's apparently the only one approved by the sheriff. Appointment takes 3.5 - 4 hours, only weekdays in the morning. On site, no video or call options available.

He requires a driver's license, employment history/resume, 2-3 page typed, double-spaced autobiography, no cell phones or recording devices. And the cost is $150 cash only, exact change.

Sounds like he's had problems with people cancelling checks on him.

The time is based on how long you take on the questionnaire it?s about 500 questions. It only took me 2.5 total with interview. $150 is the max he?s allowed can charge so that?s what he charges. I think it?s so stupid he?s the only thing one that?s approved for the test I hard to drive over there from Santa Maria. Not only that he does all the tests for the PD and sheriffs, So it?s usually a long waiting list. One thing I did tell him was if there was a cancellation to call me just to get a sooner date and it worked out for me there was one about 4 days later.

CCW Through City of Santa Barbara PD

            Hey Y'all,

I am most of the way through getting my CCW through the City of Santa Barbara. I am a resident of the City and my instructor said because of that I should get my CCW through SBPD. SBPD started accepting CCW applications on July 1, 2023 which is when I submitted mine. The staff at SBPD have been pretty helpful and responsive so far.

I have provided all of the paperwork, with the final piece being my Character Reference letters as of September 13th. SBPD has confirmed my application is 100% complete. But they have not reached out for my interview yet.

Anyone else processing a CCW through the City of Santa Barbara? What is your experience so far?

              439 days later... Permit issued.

Of course it's in a giant laminated card too big to fit in my wallet.

Congratulations! Glad it got issued, too bad it took 4 times as long for you as it did for me. Just in time for SB2...

I'm in the process of moving from Butte County to Santa Barbara County. I've held a CCW in Butte for many years, but after reading the SBSO's list of requirements for CCW am a bit anxious about being able to maintain the CCW in Santa Barbara County.

Has anybody been granted a CCW in Santa Barbara County this year (2024)?

If so, any tips or insights to share?

                  TIA...

Almost time to start the renewal process for those of us who were lucky enough to get issued shortly after NYSRPA v Bruen. Anyone start the renewal yet? When are you allowed to apply 2 or 3 months before expiration? I can't find it on the website.

I did see they raised the psych evaluation from $150 to $600, SB2 is making it cost prohibited for some people.

Did you start renewal yet? I just checked the SMPD website and they are charging $620 for renewal. I'm about to submit my renewal with the sheriff, luckily they are still at $77.

Any updates lately or anyone one know of best contact info for follow up? I applied in December and livescan checks all show completed within 2 weeks but haven’t heard anything yet. Website doesn’t have any numbers or emails for questions so might have to call main office line.

$620 for renewal? And that doesn’t include the additional costs of the required training class or ammo for qualifying (> $200). That’s getting into the price range where it could be argued that its purposefully designed to be out of reach of the bottom 40% of incomes.

Thats just the renewal every two years, the initial will cost you almost $2k in Santa Maria city limits.

Call the main # and ask for CCW department or deputy vandoren. They will likely pretend they are waiting on you for something. Did you submit your 3 character reference letters yet? When I did mine 2 years ago they said they moved me to the top because my file was complete. I did training on my own before they approved me for training. The main thing is to call find out who's doing yours, and follow-up weekly. My friend applied 16 months ago he just followed-up last week and was finally approved for psych exam.
