I was not asked for an interview for my recent renewal application or for my original application in 2022. However, I actually did do an extensive interview back in the "good cause" days, prior to being denied, so maybe that counted? My wife applied a few months after I did, and she did do an interview, so we will see what happens when she submits a renewal. She did say the interview was very chill though. They just want to see if you sound crazy I guess.

Sorry about the triple post earlier. The server was very slow and would hang every time I pushed "post reply", which I did three times.

I think this page should be retitled, "San Mateo County" so its not confused with the city of San Mateo.

Consider, with the recent (this week) "Vote of No Confidence" for the Sheriff's #1 non-sworn guy and ergo the Sheriff- I suspect CCW's will take longer.

Btw, in my very recent interview, I learned that there are no longer restrictions to modifying what guns you have on your permit now. It used to be policy that we had to wait for renewal time to change out firearms. Hopefully this holds true going forward that we can now change out at any time with a modification request. I am doing a gun swap with this renewal as I was waiting per the previous policy. I will see about a change again early next year after I acquire something new I want.

            New policy?

I asked Jennifer a couple of months ago and she said I still had to wait for renewal because they're swamped?

San Mateo did recently change their policy. Please don't be that guy (or those guys) who flood them with modification requests and prompt them to shut it down again.

Not me, I have to renew in a few months so I'll just wait.

I recently had my interview for CCW renewal. Deputy told me that it is indeed a policy change, and they intend to interview everyone applying for renewal going forward. I didn't ask when the policy change took effect.

Interview took about 20 minutes and was pretty straightforward, going over many questions that were on the written application: any fights, "incidents" with guns, domestic violence restrating orders, etc. I didn't feel like they were looking for any "gotcha" answers.

However, it was kind of disappointing becasue (i) it was about a month after I filed my renewal application before I could get an interview; and (ii) he told me to anticpate about another three weeks for a response / clearance to do the renewal class. This is annoying, beacuse you can't start renewal process until 90 days prior to expiration. If classes fill up or you have schedule conflicts on available class dates, it kind of crowds you as your renewal date approaches. This is much worse than the recently reported "file renewal, get cleared for class in a week." I guess we are still way better off than in some other counties, but it appears the San Mateo County pendulum is swinging in the wrong direction.

                    Crap...

I don't care about being interviewed again, but if it's not done in a timely manner then it might be impossible to book the training/qualification within the 90 days prior to the permit timing out.

I just got approved for my renewal. I did my interview two weeks ago. Now it’s on to the 8 hour training before getting the renewal issued.

If you don't mind sharing about how long did it take from applying to them reaching out to you to schedule the interview? How far in the future were the interview times offered? Thanks.

For me, it was about three weeks from filing renewal to their telling me to schedule an interview. They had some interviw slots just a couple days out but they fileld up before I oculd get one, so I scheduled aabout a week out from date of notice I could schedule.

You had to interview for a renewal? I could see that if "something" happened, but garden variety renewal- nope.

3 weeks from submitting renewal app to hearing about scheduling the interview. Interview time slots were only 3 per day. I had an interview 4 days after notice requesting the interview ( I did not have an interview 2 years ago when first applying).
Then a little less than 2 weeks hearing that I was approved for renewal. So about 5 weeks from application to renewal approval.

Now getting range training is next on the list.

FYI, when you get your renewed license issued the date of issue is this year’s date if issue, not just a 2 year extension from your originally issued permit. So if you rewew early, you are getting less than 2 years on your permits. Ideally you’d wait to get all paperwork finalized close to your expiration date so you get close to two years of issuance.
