Hey Vinnie where did you go for the 16 hour course?? I'm also in the Bay Area and would like to take a class. Is there any additional info needed when looking for a course?

Just an FYI: Before the recent changes..when I applied before for my ALCO CCW, I had asked if I could take the CCW training courses right away (after my application was submitted). I was told not to..I was told to wait until they asked me to.

After my interview, livescan, psych eval...then I was instructed to take the course. Again, this was with the previous CCW app procedure...just an FYI...

There's a slight possibility that the whole procedure has changed, it might be worth waiting a bit IMO.

Although I have not applied yet, I signed up for the 16 hour training at Guns and Stuff in Dublin. My class is this weekend. They were very specific about what to bring. They want an OWB holster, mag pouches, and a cover shirt or jacket. They want full-size or compact guns (no super short pocket guns).

I suppose after the training you can do what you want in terms of holsters.

I took my mandatory 8 hour CCW training class at GF&OS in Dublin on 7/16. Good class, Ricky is a BADASS. They do a mock certification drill in the range after class that ALCO will administer. Submitted my CCW app and fees to ALCO on 7/16 immediately after class. Received email from ALCO on 7/21 stating they received my app and are in the process of scheduling an interview, also stated I will receive an additional email with more information regarding the interview process. We'll see what happens.

I believe that ACSO's requirement was 16 hours even before the anticipated passing of SB918, which will make it 16 hours statewide?

I just went by the Guns and Stuff website. Their website says the 16 hour class is the one for Alameda County

                    "CCW Classes – Dublin, CA
                    Two-Day, 16 Hour Weekend California & Multi-state CCW Course
Location: Dublin Guns, Fishing and Other Stuff
This is the class for Alameda, Napa, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Calaveras, Amador, El Dorado, Yolo, Placer, San Mateo, Contra Costa* and Nevada Counties, and the City of Napa."

                    But it also says this
                    "CCW Classes- Vacaville, CA
8 Hour California CCW Permit Classes
Location: Vacaville Guns, Fishing, and Other Stuff
This 8 hour California CCW course is approved for Solano, Alameda, City of Napa, Placer, El Dorado, Calaveras, Amador, and Nevada Counties."

So they are saying the 8 hour Vacaville class is approved for Alameda County and so is the the Dublin 16 hour class. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me if t he class are based on number of hours but I signed up for the Dublin one.

I have no other actual info about what is actually required.

Either way, it's a new show but right now it states no less than 8 or more than 16 on the PC. And only the ASCO qualifies you which is another 2 to 6-hour day depending on where you live. Either way paying $800+ for 2 years is not affordable. And to renew 2 years add another $325 or more. $1,125 4year combined permit after reviewing the training and permit costs you described. Hope they don't make everyone retake the new course they should be grandfathered what they have in the permit system.

My guess: 16 hour class for initial (new) CCWs, 8 hours for renewals.

Confusion regarding the 8 hour verses the 16 hour course requirements.

Confusion regarding the 8 hour verses the 16 hour course requirements.

I too saw the same information on the Guns, Fishing and Other Stuff website and on the
Defensive Accuracy website which does the actual training.

I called Defensive Accuracy for clarification. I was informed that ACSO only requires an 8 hour course
and live fire qualification would be done at the ACSO range.

Defensive Accuracy offers the 16 hours course so if SB918 gets enacted you would still be covered and
would not need to take an additional 8 hr course. That's scenario is certainly possible but I can't help
to think it might be a means for Defensive Accuracy to increase their profits.

Not knowing what the additional 8 hours would entail but it might be basically rudimentary firearms
                          handling, safety etc., etc..

I don't like we have to qualify at the ASCO that's petty along with the interview and mental eval excessive.

                            16-Hour Course 1000 (People) * 385k in a year
                            8-Hour Course 1000 (People) * 225K in a year

                            10-15 in a class 10 Classes 300 people in 6 months (3 locations) 1800 Students per year.
                            Not including Private class

That's a lot of money in 1 year. Some will be happy some will be fighting for that dough range or instructors.

I just hope they don't ask me to do the "Draw a Tree" test. Years ago, when my b-tch ex wife was trying to get full custody of our now adult daughters, the court ordered us to both have psych evals by some woman in Pleasanton. I was asked to do a number of tests. One of them was "draw a tree". Apparently I failed that test miserably. Apparently my tree was too simple compared to my education and intelligence (PhD Electrical Engineer). I can't draw for crap and my tree did look more like a mushroom cloud. The clinical psych world has some real scary crap they can put you through. Well its their interpretations that can get pretty scary when they know they are controlling some aspect of your life. I have no clue what it is done in this situation.
