The expense depends on your trainer. They are free to handle that however they want. Some charge per gun. As I recall, on mine he charged per page. There are 4 or 5 per page. Your first page in included with your class fee. If you want additional pages there was an extra charge for the second page. If you plan on lots of guns on your permit, it probably worth considering this portion of the expense when you choose your trainer.

I have 7, not that I ever intend to carry most of those but I view having them on my permit as a sort of legal protection in case of an inadvertent mishap in transportation such as you thought one was unloaded but it was not, an unscrupulous or uninformed LEO wants to claim it was loaded but it was not, or the lock on the case that you thought locked did not really lock. Having all your handguns on your permit protects you from the legal consequences of all of that.
I was going to do that, but when I figured out how expensive it would be, I just stuck with the ones that I would actually carry. I have 6 on mine (once it renews in a couple weeks) and two more to put on after I get my new permit. I want to be able to try out other guns, but since i need them on the permit in order to try them, I figured what the heck. If I don't use them, then i can rethink next time.

That would be correct. The only thing I would do differently (this may be a moot point with them mailing the permits) is make the appointment for pick-up as soon as I had the class set-up.

Then I take my training within 30 days of my scheduled appointment, unless I get denied of course.

My issue is that my application was submitted on Jan 25, so 90 days from that point (included weekends) would put me at April 25. That would leave me exactly 1 week to get my training done and uploaded prior to my scheduled appointment date. Now if the approval process for the application only counts weekdays then that would actually put the deadline to May 31. At which point I wouldn't even know what to do.

If that 30 days isn't enough, make sure you discuss this with the clerk at your first appointment. I don't know if they make exceptions or not. But 30 days should be plenty of time to get into an open course unless you have personal scheduling issues due to your job or something. But again, talk that over with the clerks at your first appointment.

I'm not sure if it switched back to 30 days, but I was 90 when I got my approval a few months ago.

"You will now need to complete your 8 hour firearms training for the weapons you want listed on your license. A list of approved instructors can be found on the San Diego Sheriff's CCW page. You have 90 days from the date of this approval to complete your required 8 hour Safety Firearm Course. You must complete this prior to being issued your CCW license. Once you have completed the training, you can upload the training certificiate via the order tracker in Permitium."

Edit: yes, it still seems to be 90 days, here a link to an electronic brochure that is currently on sdso's website. On the lefthand side it says that you have 90 days to complete training. https://www.sdsheriff.gov/home/showp...75108892470000

My concern is that I may not have enough time to get my 8 hour training course completed before my scheduled appointment date. Will I be afforded the time to be able to get my training done before my appointment?

Also this...you don't take the course until you've been approved. Once you're approved you will have 30 days to take the course and upload your certificate. I've Been Approved - Now What?

If you are approved for a new CCW, you will receive an email from auto@permitium.com. You will need to pay the final fee (you can do this online if you want) and complete an 8-hour Firearm Safety course. Part of the course is classroom and part is qualifying with the firearms you want listed on your CCW. At the end of the class, you will receive a Firearms Safety & Proficiency Certificate with the firearms make, model, caliber and serial number. Upload that Certificate into Permitium (via the Order Tracker).

Last step, email us at ccw@sdsheriff.org to let us know you have completed the safety course and uploaded your certificate. As long as all fees are paid and there are no problems with your certificate, your CCW will be mailed to you. Please let us know immediately if your address has changed.
