New from Modesto, Ca

Hey guys,

My name is Kevin and I am new to the forums here. I have been browsing and there is a ton of information to go through. I just signed my contract to join the Air Force and I ship out on April 5th, 2011. I have decided to start a California legal AR-15 project so when I get to BMT, and have to qualify on the M16, I am not completely lost. I have pretty much ZERO knowledge in guns. Grew up with a anti-gun step dad so the most experience I have, is shooting shot guns with my real dad, an old WWI rifle with my ex's dad and a 9mm pistol I believe. I am going to shop my local gun shop today (if they are open) or tomorrow after work for a lower receiver. The thing I am worried about is walking into a gun shop with no knowledge. Is the guy going to shake his head and tell me to not dive into a project like this, or do you think they will be pretty helpful? If anyone has a shop near me (Modesto, Ca) they would like to recommend it would be greatly appreciated. I will start a thread with pictures when I start getting parts to keep you all updated on my progress. Thank you and I look forward to sharing with you all.

Awesome. From searching it looks like people have good things to say about Alquist and that's about a 5 minute drive from where I live. Thanks for the map that was very useful. Too bad for me it seems most shops are closed on Sundays.

You can try out sierra arms in modesto or barnwood arms in ripon or if you want to go for a lil drive here in tracy there's Tracy rifle and pistol, shop around so you can check out the variety each shop has as well as prices. Good luck with your build and welcome to Calguns!

I want to get this as close to the military issue m16 as possible. What I have come up with so far is a 20" barrel. A2 style Upper. Standard iron sights. Is this correct so far?

Also, I noticed most of the military pictures show the rifle with the handle. Is this standard and part of the sights?

An AR15 is incredibly easy to assemble and disassemble. I didn't have much knowledge a couple years ago and that was the first gun I messed around with. So it is definitely a good one to get started on. Thanks for your soon to be service.

I say upgrade to an ACOG or red dot, as you will probably be using those in the field. The military also uses a rifle based on the m16 that has a changeable upper, so you can go from Long Distance Sniping to CQC. I forget the name right now but I am sure a search would yeild the answer. I personally would build this gun for myself and work on distance and close quarter stuff.

i built my ar-15 and it came out sweet, go to barnwood arms and ask for larry....... hes very helpful..... they also have tons of different uppers and lowers to choose from.

From Modesto myself, Ive got limited knowledge on AR-15s, but I do have one and I'm more than happy to help if you need it. Welcome to the boards

Avoid sierra arms, go to barnwood arms or alquist if you want to stay near town, or head to Tracy rifle and pistol if you want to meet some guys who really know their AR-15s! I feel like a walking talking ad for them these days.
