Kestryll's last login was 12/2. (ETA: I just saw a post from Librarian on 12/3.) So, it's a bit presumptuous to say there isn't anyone left to do it. Likewise, we don't know if the technical problems allow him to or not.

As Preston-CLB said, give it a rest. For the faithful who continue to post EVERY DAY, it simply gets old and repetitive to keep going over the same thing again and again and again and again and...

It's really very simple. If you think the site is 'done' and there's 'no one' around to hold your hand, then why are you still coming here complaining? Your other choice is to do what the rest of us are doing... work with it and stop 'demanding' the site work with you.

At some point all of us will have to concede this is a ghost ship (for now)
Librarian and other Mods have no information as to what’s going on with the site either. They have said as much in the contributor lounge.

Guys... "Ghost ship" would not be a correct term. Why? A "Ghost ship" is a vessel with no living crew aboard. We know that Kestryll is giving it some attention and since the Captain is considered part of the crew, that means at least one, living body on board. Then there's your own admission that Librarian and other Mods are or have been in the Contributor Lounge, not to mention that I pointed out Librarian has posted in OT just the other day. That means at least part of the crew is still on board.

Then there's the fact that many passengers are still on board, posting EVERY DAY, in a variety of subforums. Nope. We don't have the membership traffic we used to and most don't believe the 'guest' numbers posted, but that doesn't change the fact that people are still active on this site, including posting and trading.

We haven't heard that it's been decommissioned, awaiting scrapping operations. Quite the contrary. The Captain and part of the crew are still here; we just don't know how far the technical glitches limit their powers. Many of the passengers are present and 'working with it;' although, admittedly, the vast majority of us are frustrated. Thus, all in all, the site is anything but a 'Ghost ship.' As Mark Twain once noted... "The report of my death was [or, in this case, the death of this site is] an exaggeration."

As a side note, the terms 'abandoned' and 'derelict' would be a misapplication as well as the first isn't true and the second implies things which aren't strictly true, at least not anymore, so far as we know. They speak more to your own, personal perceptions than to what's actually going on, at least insofar as we've been told by Kestryll. As I have repeatedly admonished, if our faith in Kestryll is misplaced, we'll know and, as to the rest of it, no 'fix' is going to be instantaneous simply because some member or group of members grouses.

So... Rather than 'preaching' about or lamenting over the site's 'demise,' how about helping the rest of the passengers and crew keep things afloat and defending against 'pirates' until a 'fix' is had or the official call to 'abandon ship' goes out?

Trapped you are correct "Ghost Ship" is not the correct or appropriate term. I withdraw that term, and place forward the term "Titanic" as a more suitable term. Like the once great ship, we hit an iceberg with the database update. The ship is now dead in the water. Captain and crew still abord, but comms are down and the engine compartment is flooding. May passengers have fled to raccoon clad lifeboats while others stay put awaiting rescue or repair.

Of those passengers who have fled, many of them are adrift waiting to see what happens to the great ship. Some of the passengers are hunkered down and refuse to board the life boats. The captain and the crew can do nothing to save the once great liner. Those in the life rafts look back at the once great ship in disbelief. Captain and crew appear to be still on the bridge but do not seem able to fix the once great ship. The task may be overwhelming to them so the stand idle awaiting what comes next.

All of us passengers took for granted the great ship was indestructible, but alas that was not the case. Calguns is the door, and we are all Jack in the water.

Actually, that reference is more in line with personal perceptions than reality as well. Why?

The ship is NOT 'dead in the water.' As I have noted now, a number of times, there are many members posting EVERY DAY. There are others actually conducting trading. Has there been 'damage?' Yep. But, we were warned about that potential, numerous times, LONG before the forced update.

Are comms down? Yes and no. DM's aren't working for most. We only hear from Kestryll periodically (which is your primary complaint), but we do hear and he really doesn't need to communicate simply to quell the simpering. He needs to communicate in relation to actual and meaningful progress.

The engine compartment flooding? I think that depends on one's viewpoint and trust in Kestryll. He's told us that he's looking to change the software and to do that, he needs a DBA along with someone to manage the change. The vast majority of the site is still accessible, though maybe not as readily as it once was. What isn't available or, in your turn of phrase, 'flooded' are sections which many have found workarounds for and, if they haven't, it's mostly demonstrated that those compartments aren't 'necessary' so much as 'conveniences.'

Have many passengers found other conveyances? Yes and no. Some abandoned ship and came back. Some abandoned ship and are waiting to see if it's brought back to their personal level of comfort. Some abandoned ship, largely because they are more interested in glitz and glamour than tried and true; which, granted, isn't as 'true' (for now) as it was. However, only those who CHOOSE to be are actually 'adrift' in that, as I've now pointed out, several times, the site is accessible and members are posting EVERY DAY. Many who post, complaining they can't access the ship and can't post are, in fact, accessing it and posting; just not always at their moments of convenience. It's an old story on this site in terms of people posting that they can't post...

A Captain isn't necessarily an Chief Engineer and Kestryll has made it clear that the 'fixes' which remain are beyond his ken. Thus, the stipulated need and search for a DBA and someone to manage the change. That's not synonymous with standing idle, waiting to see what comes next. It indicates, as I've told you, that things are a bit more involved and that a 'fix' should not be expected or demanded 'instantly' or even in .

If anyone thought of the site as 'indestructible,' they were being naïve in terms of computers and the Internet. If by 'indestructible,' the assumption was that repairs would take no time or be noticeable, I'm not sure that such was the latter, but was more likely unrealistic, particularly given the ample warnings over the years.

Insofar as being "Jack" in the water... Give us all a break. As I said before, if you think the ship is dead in the water and most of us are gonna 'die' like Jack, then find someplace else. The rest of us are quite alive and dealing with it. Grousing and spreading inaccuracies is simply... well... you know...

Someone seems quite butthurt. I made a simple observation regarding site accessibility and the decline into oblivion. It’s hard to post EVERY DAY when you can’t access the site. You must have some reading comprehension issues since I don’t recall “demanding” anything. If there are posts that are old and repetitive, try something novel like not looking at a thread that you know will have some old and repetitive posts.

Nope. Not 'sore' at all. It's what I've said; i.e., that I'm providing the 'rest of' or 'more of' the story for readers. Just like you 'can't access the site every day.' Okay. However, there are many who do, period. Are there times when the site can't be accessed? Yes. But, for many, it's a 'somewhat' predictable rotation. You see, your 'can't access the site every day' is, in most or at least many cases a matter of personal perception rather than reality.

I always shake my head at 'demands' that I turn away from the repetitive misinformation some spread. Yes. 'Demand.' Look up the definition, there are a variety which apply. However, suffice to say that terms such as 'forcefully,' 'not expecting to be refused' (or, in this case, contradicted or have the 'rest of the story' conveyed), 'something claimed as due or owed,' 'an insistent and peremptory request' all seem to apply to many of the repetitive posts made by a certain 'group.'

Want me to look away? Try your own advice. Stop focusing on the 'problems' and deal with them without constantly or repetitively or regularly complaining and spinning a narrative which is inaccurate and/or incomplete.

As I've said, it's not exactly 'optimism.' Most of those who are participating are just as frustrated and have our 'moments' as well. We just don't act like a... I guess today's term is... "Karen" (a pejorative English slang term for a stereotypical middle-class, middle-aged white woman who is perceived as entitled or excessively demanding)... mostly, when we have our 'moments.' We don't demand to speak to the manager or have him speak to us. We don't convey a sense of entitlement. We simply deal with the 'what is' in the moment and have a certain level of 'faith' that it won't always remain this way. We don't go on to what many see as a 'competing' site (rightly or wrongly) and post things like...

...on that 'competing site,' then come back and use terms like 'butthurt' when we tell people they are spreading misinformation. (That post was from raccoon's site, just over a year ago.)

Again, it's not so much 'optimism' in that we don't necessarily 'expect' anything in relation to timing or see only the favorable. We simply want accuracy in the reporting and, if you think someplace else is 'cooler,' then don't necessarily demand we simply 'accept' you coming in and preaching how 'uncool' this place and/or our actions is/are.

Well, since you're so consumed with the term, one does wonder where your own finger(s) is/are and how you know what remedies to suggest.

This site is still screwed up. I wasn’t able to get on it for days, now it’s working really fast. But I expect that soon it will become inaccessible yet again.
