San Jose 2nd Saturday 'newbies' event

I just got this request from CalGunMom, regarding the recurring postings for this event.....
    -------------------------
Is this happening this Saturday, April 12th?? It's really confusing the way this thread is updated, maybe it would be better to start a new thread each month?

Would folks here prefer that I do a new 'thread' for this event each month?

(by the by, the event had its fifth anniversary last month, 2009-2014.......hopefully, the event crew and I have been 'doing something right'.......anyway, as long as people are still interested, and the supply of 22 rounds holds out, we'll keep on doing the event.)

    Let me know.................... : )

    cheers

    Newbie

Please post a new thread each time. I was there at the range Saturday to see if they still do Saturday night league and to my surprise it was not, anytime soon that it will start again?

    Tom.

Hmm.........well, I don't know. To which event do you refer?

Don Meyer's 'Action Pistol' group has scheduled use of the range on first and third Saturdays, from 1800 to 2200.

The newbies' outreach event has the second Saturdays, from 1400 to 2100.

The fourth Saturday evening, after the regular public hours, is tentatively scheduled for a new smallbore match event, which is in process of being formed.

      cheers

Thanks Carla! I think it would be easier to have a new thread each time, but am willing to go with the majority vote.

It's been a while since I've been to one of these. What's the basic rules and guidelines again? Used to be that the early part of the day was reserved for 22 handguns and rifles, but then later in the day it was open for larger caliber handguns.

Full-size rifles are still no go I presume. Also vaguely recall something about 'hardball' ammo, which I think is synonymous with FMJ? Something to do with the backstop or target hangers...

            Hello, CBruce,

There was formerly a range restriction on 'hardball' aka 'FMJ' projectiles, but, since we replaced the backstop plates with new ones of a higher grade of steel, the restriction has been rescinded.......so fire all the FMJ you might care to, these days.

The event is primarily for 'newbies' to shooting, either young people or adults, but we must have a parent present with anyone under 18, (or an adult person acting 'in loco parentis' with a signed note from a parent.)

The first two to three hours of the event is restricted to 22's, to keep the ambient noise level down while newbies are receiving basic instruction.

After that, centre-fire handguns up to 45 are acceptable. (357 and 44 mag are alright, if loaded to 38spl or 44spl load levels. Full-charge magnums may pose a risk of 'bounce-back'.)

We offer some free 'target time' for experienced shooters who bring a newbie to the event, or help with cleanup, etc., after the newbies have all had a turn.

Centre-fire rifles 'may' be alright, if I, or whomever is in charge of the line at the time, can be reasonably convinced that the loads used in them are certainly 'gallery loads', loaded down to pistol-caliber energy levels. (for this range, the spec is 450 ft/lbs. max.)

Any full-charge centre-fire rifle load can create a seriously dangerous bounce-back hazard at the indoor range, so they may never be fired there.

            cheers

            Carla
