I took my pregnant wife deer hunting with me and had parked on the side of a hill to look at some deer. As we were getting out of the truck the slope of the hill and the wind blew the truck door shut on my wifes hand. I ran around and got the door open as she was screaming and as soon as I opened the door she fainted and fell smacking her head. I loaded her up and made a code three run out of the mountains and she ended up miscarrying the next day.
Sorry a little off topic but my advice is just to take it easy its only 9 months.

Asking the doctor is the best course of action. She or he will be in the best position to determine your wife's safest options. In the absence of professional advice, err on the side of caution - there is a little one growing in there!

I just asked my folks (Doctor and Dentist), just be safe and NO shooting for now. For the safety factor and the unknown developmental affects the various chemicals and sounds can have on your wonderful fetus (baby)! Bear in mind the earliest stages of any human's development is the the most critical, for it is the foundation for the rest of their life! =D

if you go shooting, make sure to wash up good before you go into the house, lead is very detrimental to early brain development, I use to leave my shoes outside too

You can "think" whatever you want. I would say it is downright irresponsible to try to use some bogus theory as support for exposing a developing human life to possible harmful situations. Doctors recommend babies not be exposed to ANY loud noises, including fireworks! Pregnant mothers should remain in soothing environments. Just hearing another persons voice can accelerate a babies heart rate! I cant imagine what a firearm barely a few feet away could do to a developing babies ears, or what response it could cause! Just for the lead exposure the doctor recommended my friends wife wait until she had stopped breastfeeding to even handle ammunition! I would rather be cautious then even risk a one in a million chance of hurting my child?!?!? Pretty insane to give unqualified advice. I have seen and felt a baby moving around to music, pretty sure a gunshot would have an incredible effect on a baby. Thats my feelings on this, if you cant go without shooting for 9months, you are not ready to have a baby!

mythbusters found this to be incorrect. There were a few concerned veiwers on the show when Kari Byron was shown shooting firearms while pregnant. They found the ambiotic, uterus and moms fatty tissue is enough to stop loud noises. Much more so than a 7/16" piece of foam.
Try sticking you head in a bucket of water at the range.

I would not do it just for the lead danger or possible D-A ND. When ever I get home from the range its through the garage, strip down, everything in the washer before I head up. Lead is no joke.

edit: just read.... due in Sep...stay home and get rest....remember sex and a lot of stretching exercises a week before your due date....congrats!!! Your world is about to change. We just had our 1st in April and my wife was more pissed when I told her no more race track.

On a side note... My wife is also pregnant and I decided to shoot a lot less and she won't go at all. The money that we will save I will use to buy a gun (thinking of 1911) on the day my son is born and keeping it in the box and unfired to give him on his 21st birthday.

life as you know it has now changed: the priority is delivery of a healthy baby and its survival after delivery. shooting range gratification can now be a delayed gratification and appreciated more fully later.

^^ I would go with this. I'm not a mother or a doctor, but why risk it? I know when I finally settle down and get ready to have a child not going to range is going to have to become a reality. It's going to be d@mn hard but.. it'll be worth it for my child.

Wow, now a mythbusters reference to add fuel to the irresponsible fire. No pun intended. Reading these responses absolutely pisses me off. While not a doctor by any means, I have sat through a few classes dealing with embryonic and fetal development. The most important thing I would like to drive home is that there is very little research to create or support any claims. That is why every doctor you talk to should advise against exposure to loud noises. Without getting outside of laymans terms, when a pregnant mother is exposed to stress, blood vessels contract and cause a restriction of nutrients and oxygen to a developing embryo/fetus. That alone should be enough to avoid shooting. It has been proven that the embryo/fetus is NOT fully protected from noise. To what extent it can be damaged is not known. So far links to deformities and low birth weights have been proven as a direct result of exposure to loud noises. Its not even a debate, we are talking about protecting a child. Are people seriously trying to recommend/argue that its even remotely ok to purposely expose a developing baby to a potential risk?

My wife's preggo with out first and we consulted our doctor about shooting prior to going and we shot up until 18 weeks. After that the doctor suggested we refrained from shooting so now I get all her ammo That being said, my aunt hunted up until 7 months with all three of my cousins and they all turned out just fine.

Take it or leave it, but I am not a doc or trying to be one. Congrats on the first.

Docs and OBGYN's are all going to have different personal views on the matter. Mythbusters use science and I like science. When my wife was pregnant with our sixth child she wanted to go shooting at 6 months pregnant, and Disneyland too. Doc said he wasn't sure about the noise from an indoor range and said it was our call, but best to err on the side of caution, so we went to Disneyland instead. Got more than a few sideways glances and "Are you sure? You're pregnant!" at various rides like Matterhorn. Our boy is 2 now and doing just fine.
