For anyone reading this necro thread (that has good info)...
consider the M&P full size 9mm, as it comes with a detachable backstrap that comes in small, medium, and large
My wife has very small hands and the only guns she can comfortably reach the trigger on are the M&P w/ small backstrap & Kahr pistols in 9mm. We've had good results with her M&P, I only owned one Kahr and wasn't impressed.
I would strongly recommend against the j-frame revolver as a first gun. It is not pleasant to shoot and training with it will be difficult. That said, it's a good gun,
If you don't enjoy shooting your gun, you won't practice, and you won't be very good with it.
Glock 19 & 17 are great choices if you can reach the trigger comfortably. The sights should be replaced on Glocks as they're piss poor.
For sights I'd recommend Heinie Ledge Qwik Straight 8s installed by Heinie. Expensive, but worth it IMO.
Always shoot the gun you want before you buy it. Holding it is nice, but it's kind of like sitting in a car without test driving it.
