My Sister In Law & I were thinking about opening a local store due to the lack of them in our area and we were curious, what kind of hoops are involved in starting? I've owned my own business before so I have some insight there but getting all the FFL red tape and such completed has seemed daunting to us.

There are several threads in this forum that speaks to your very question, so look there because the "book has already been written". Check out the "FFL forum" and your answer awaits.

That being said, it is a long process with a ton of hoops to jump through and definitely not for impatient people, LOL!

My favorite FFL, Nicks Gunworks in Lodi, is run by a female, Sarah. Long-time family owned business. Nick is her uncle and when he couldn't run the store for awhile she stepped-in to help. I love Nick, but the place is much better organized now. It's cleaner, more efficient and inventory turns over faster. It's a win-win, in my opinion. I like going there even more now.

At the last Vallejo Gun Show, I spoke to Angie of CA Derringer (hope I got the business name correct!) She and her dad have an FFL out of San Mateo. She's on Calguns and might be another good source to contact.

From her sales last weekend, I don't think any of the men had a problem with dealing with her as a woman.

I sure don't get that sense either when I'm working the Calguns booth. (Kind of silly given the fact that we're surrounded by all sorts of knives, firearms, etc., but there's always the handy frying pan in the booth kit for unruly folks ...)

Most gun stores are not welcoming. I have met more than one person who wanted to buy a gun but was so intimidated and rudely treated in a gun store that they never got that first gun.

It must be even worse for a woman shopper.

              Congratulations on the FFL.

I think that's going to be one og my strong points. "Welcome" to my gun store, have fun, and while you're at it, spend lots of money, LOL!!!

Why be rude? It just doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the congrats, almost up and running, got my CFD and magstripe reader last week. One more thing to go is just getting hooked up with MCI for the DROS fee processing.

You guys and gals are all great for extending a warm welcome to me in the forums. Appreciate it!

Although not owned by women, there are a few gun stores that have female sales people that I know of.

                  The Gun Room

Plus female gunnies can give insightful information to prospective female customers that have qualms or reservations about firearms.

The above is owned by two women, Madison and Gina. SUPER nice folks. I've done a few OLL transfers through them.
