    Women and CCW

I am seeing a lot more women both in my shop and at the local gun shows, Ontario, Del Mar, Orange County that have gotten their CCW, or are actually in the process (post interview). Have also had a number for phone calls asking about the process.

Calls to the store and visits to the store are more likely to be single women pursuing a permit, gun shows seem to be more couples.

I get couples, but most inquires seem to be single women, more often than not over 40.

So I am wondering if that is the experience of the ladies here with friends who are getting CCW's or you yourself have a CCW.

What have been your biggest hurdles in the process, equipment, training.

My lady carries off duty.... I think most trouble she kind of had was toward gear (holster and belt) and clothes. She prefers wearing fitted clothes so she cant really IWB with her current clothes so she had to buy separate clothes for IWB purpose or carry in her purse.

Ditto on clothes, my wife uses a designer purse that has a pocket almost made for CCW. Also, perishable skills. Need to shoot and do drills more often.

Gun Control is like treating the symptom, not the disease. Gun laws only restrict people who obey the law.

I know a number of ladies are getting their CCW I have them come in my store and at gun shows, this weekend was an example. Finding more Glocks that revolvers and sigs lately, that is sort of a new trend. Glock 42 (which I have never shot) seems to be a recent favorite.

A number have gone both on body with purse as an alternate. Many are shopping for themselves. In store they are often alone, in the gun shows we are seeing them shop together.

We are still detecting some frustration as the old guard appear to be at least a little dismissive.

Waiting for FBI/DOJ clearance in Sacramento County, average time 4 months.

Still trying to finalize firearms to carry, and trying out holsters. I wont be doing purse carry.

Have been permitted in every state of residence since I was 21 (that's 3 total states - TN, FL and CA).

I haven't ever had any gender specific hurdles to be honest.

Glad to find this thread. The prompt in renewing my interest in guns was a picture my friend posted of a beautiful blue Glock. I ordered it along with a beautiful blue leather carrying case. The case will only be for going to the gun range.

I am a backpack user, so eventually will want to carry in my backpack. I am not one for tucking a holster under my clothes. I need to read up on CCW, but is in a backpack good or bad? It will be a long time until I get the CCW, I am starting out as a novice and have many classes to go.

A back pack can be acceptable, but significantly increases your risk in several areas. In most instances a backpack will be slower on the draw (of course practice makes perfect). It is easier to separate you from a carried object than a worn object. It is possible to lose focus on the backpack, allowing it to become accessible to others (Children, people with Alzheimer's, dementia, or prying fellow workers.)

A backpack can allow you to carry a larger gun than you might on body, spare ammo, body armor (some backpacks will carry a bullet proof plate, but they are expensive). A basic CCW backpack will cost around $50, a sling bag around $25.

In a fight for your life, sudden violent unexpected attack a backpack may be harder to access, but it's better than no carrying a gun.

What kind of gun would you carry, and what is your normal mode of dress?

Thanks grantar. I have a Taurus pistol and planning on eventually getting a semi. I am in the early stages of getting all my equipment set up so have plenty of time to figure this out. At work it's business casual and on the weekends it's casual wear.

Have been checking out holsters and found this pouch for a purse so will think about that for the back pack.

a CCW is a must if you intend to carry in a purse, backpack, or on your body Concealed. it is not legal in the state of California to conceal carry w/o that CCW. just a heads up that perhaps you need to do more research on that CCW sooner rather than later.

if you have a fishing license and are out doing that activity you may not need that CCW but pretty much for all other activities you will need it.

in this day and age getting caught with a concealed weapon could cost you your freedom and even your profession.

I'm just some old white guy, stumbled upon this thread, but in my not-so-humble opinion, a Sig P238 is just made for IWB carry for people who don't wear super wide gang banger clothes. That gun is so easy to conceal, it's unbelievable. It's also one of the best guns out there.

The problem with the Sig other than being a Sig is the small levers[safety] and mag release button on the pistol. I watch the bug action pistol matches at the gun club has and with the full size pistols the shooters are lightening fast ,with the Sigs the safety lever is a bad thing to operate, all the sub compact pistole are harder to shoot but the Sigs really suck big time .

The problem with purse and backpack carry is the snatch and run , you have just armed a criminal.

It's an alternative if you have no other way that really works such as when wearing a dress. For some it's a back up weapon. My clients include members of the California Gang Task Force, LASD, LAPD, OCSD,multiple PD agencies and SBSD all of who have to either travel to Mission Viejo or one of the gun shows we do. Depends on need, and training. Yes it can be snatched, or even rummaged through, but if its the only viable means to carry? It can also have advantages, you can have your hand on your weapon with some models without brandishing or tipping your hand. I sold more than a dozen simple concealed carry sling bags to undercover officers working the political rallies during the primaries. Carries multiple flex cuffs, spare mags and a weapon without looking out of place.

AS for the Sig P238, it's not clear if you have shot the gun yourself. Well I personally don't like guns with manual safeties and am and M&P shooter by and large, the Sig P238 shoots really well even for my large hands or the smaller hands of many of the women who shop my store. It's really a matter of what fits them well, but the gun itself has very acceptable combat accuracy to fifteen yards. A full size gun will trump a compact in almost every case, but if you can't carry it, it really doesn't matter. Anybody can carry a P238.
