Well, aside from being flat wrong, they're flat wrong. I wouldn't say shooting is particularly dainty, but neither is bowling or softball. And most of the women I know who shoot are genuine ladies, in the best sense of the term.

For myself, any guy who likes me less because I shoot, own guns and am able to protect myself, is no great loss. REAL MEN LIKE STRONG WOMEN. Any man who implies that you should not take responsibilty for your safety and for your fun, is not a keeper.

Most men that I know, who shoot, would be THRILLED to have a wife or girlfriend to shoot with. If you go to a Calguns Monthly Shoot, you will probably come away knowing five or six great guys to shoot with.

So I think your family may have your best interests at heart, but they're wrong. And maybe insanely old fashioned.

Get an instructor, learn to shoot, see if you actually like it, and go get your gun.

And Welcome! You've found the right place to discuss guns, women's shooting, women's carry and other relevant issues. The Women's Forum has some of the liveliest conversations in Calguns.
Thanks ! You know I was thinking that they were old fashioned but people in my family own guns, oh the irony... I'm starting to come to conclusion, it is that I am the baby and I will always be their little girl in their eyes, and if they do feel that way, they need to get over it lol

My wife shoots, our daughter shoots, and our grand-daughter shoots. They all love it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a woman wanting to shoot, and she shouldn't be ashamed or have to justify it either.

Divine, I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet. If you're looking for training, Calguns and NRA have teamed up to bring the Women on Target shooting class to Burro Canyon in Azusa. It's a beginners class for women only. Guns and ammo are included. Here's the calguns thread, and here is the 2015 schedule.

                    Welcome Divine!!

I'll second the Women on Target class. I teach with them and have a SUPER FUN time every time I teach.

It's about the only fun I'm getting in right now, because I'm pregnant and I'm limiting myself to .22s and outdoor ranges (for the most part).

*GRIN* I wonder how those same family members would react to a PREGNANT woman shooting? Hehe.

Here is a link to the Women on Target calender. Sign up soon, those things fill up fast! We have pistol and rifle, and provide the firearms, so come on out!

When I was dating my wife she stuck a 2 inch revolver in the face of a guy who wanted to come thru her bedroom window at 0200. He didn't think she was very attractive at that juncture.

Get into it and get good training, and then buy a gun after you know a little.

Social stigmas are durable things, regrettably. As a black man who grew up in Chicago, the fact that I hold a Utah CCW was so scandalous that all conversation stopped at the family dinner table.

"Son, strong black men dont carry guns." "The NRA sells guns to bring down the inner city." On and on it went.Know you're not alone in being viewed differently by your family for daring to be armed .

Good comments, Gardone, very intriguing. As usual.

I don't discuss the 'gun thing' with my family. They don't know it exists. Pretty much the only people who know I shoot are people who have seen me shoot. Or my Calguns friends.

As a result, I've acquired a whole new set of friends. And glad to know 'em.

I work in a male-dominated career field. Based on my job, my family sort of just assumed that I own guns and my dad actually seems quite proud of it.

As for women with guns being thought of as unattractive. I am plenty attractive. I can be both feminine and capable - those two things do not exclude each other. Over time, I have come to realize that the self-confident men are the ones who find my independent personality and skill with firearms to be sexy. It's the insecure men that seem to see those things as a threat and therefore unattractive. In my opinion, a real man will be proud to have such an awesome woman at his side. Theoretically, an alpha male should want an alpha female; yet, some just want a submissive woman.

I tell you what, getting a woman like me to submit/accept a man's leadership is a far greater 'achievement' than picking up the first needy and submissive woman one sees. I once went out with this one guy who had an appreciation for my independence. He looked at me, smiled and said, "You don't intimidate me". *That*, my friends, told me everything I needed to know about him. In fact, being with a guy that does not feel threatened by me gives me the freedom to act more like a lady. However, overall, more men find me intimidating than not and it does pose a problem for my love life. The guns themselves are not the sole factor - it's my personality type that makes me intimidating (that is, owning guns is an expression of my strong personality). But, it is what it is and I'm not going to change. I am heartened to know that there are men that do exist out there who find women like me plenty attractive.

With that, Divine, it's a fine balance. If your family's shared values or ethnic background is informing these beliefs, you may have a hard time overcoming their objections. It's hard to walk the line between doing what you need to do and not upsetting the apple cart. Just be the best you that you can be and you will find your place of balance.
