Went through the program in 99, great pay and benefits, been running cranes for almost 20 years now. Still feels like playing with big boy Tonka toys.

My son took the last test and got on the list, but did not score high enough to get called. He is rushing to try and get his Class A drivers license before filing his app next month. He also has OSHA 10 safety and Flaggers license, if that helps. If not, he will seek non-union employment since he has NCCER credentials for heavy equipment operation. Union is the way to go, though. It is hard to get your foot in the door.

Does anyone know how where you live affects your chances of getting called up for the apprentice program? In other words, are you more likely to get called with the same test score if you live in Long Beach, for example, than in Apple Valley?

I’m sure as long as you have wheels it doesn’t matter.

If he has his class a license have him go to the ibew local 47 union hall in riverside. Needs to go between 7-9 or 1-3 to sign the books. Right now it's slow but it picks up in spring through the rest of the year. Probably won't get called for work until summer as they have to cycle through the list on the books. But eventually he will get called. Groundman make around 33 an hour.

Thanks! He is about ready to go take the test for his Class A. We hope he has it before the operating engineers union test so he can get the 10 extra points. If he does as well as last time (or better) with the 10 bonus points for a Class A, he should get called eventually. But this sounds like a good deal, too!

With a Class A he can get into this program. I went and through and few other guys on here did too.
