n00b shipping questions

have a few questions ...

ok so what do i need to do to ship a handgun to a buyers FFL ?

how does the paperwork get handled if we are 600+ miles apart ?

UPS/FedEx overnight/insured ?

i am a bit confused in what i have to do to sell and ship

have to head back to work but hope to see some helpful info when i get home , this is the first time i have even considered shipping a firearm

Make sure that they will receive from an individual first. If they will, next day air UPS or Fedex are your only options. Insured with signature is a good idea. An individual cannot ship via USPS.

It will be a dealer transfer, not a PPT. The dealer will charge the buyer their customary rate for a dealer transfer.

It can sometimes be cheaper to ship through a FFL since then it can be shipped USPS.

so me as the seller would not have to fill anything out?
hmmmm that makes me a lil sketchy wondering if it get taken out of my name with no paperwork on my side

The transferring dealer will want a photo of your drivers license or state ID card. Your name and address will be logged into their aquisition and disposition book as the source of the firearm. The paperwork done with the buyer will put the firearm in their name. That's all that is required.

So the dealer my buyer want to use has a website and wanted to make sure this is correct

First locate a FFL (dealer) that is willing to accept a firearm from a private person. (Dealers are not required by law to accept firearms from a private person). Most dealers will not give a private person a copy of their FFL; but they are required to provide the numeric portions of their FFL needed to verify the dealers FFL status with ATF.

is this suffeant to cover my arse just having a FFL# ?

Shipment by Unlicensed Persons

Any shipper who does not have a Federal Firearms License (FFL) is considered to be an 'unlicensed person'. This section contains information on how unlicensed persons can ship firearms. If you have an FFL, please skip to the next section for shipping suggestions.
The most important thing to know is that you must only ship guns to a licensed dealer. If the buyer is not a licensed dealer, he will have to make arrangements to ship the item to a dealer in his state.

Before you ship a gun, the buyer must fax or mail you a copy of the dealer's signed FFL license. You can only ship the gun to the address on the license. You must inform the carrier that the package contains a firearm. Of course, the firearm cannot be shipped loaded; ammunition may not be shipped in the same box. You should take the copy of the signed FFL with you when you take the item to be shipped in case the shipper wishes to see it.

Yes this is sufficient. My FFL to validate would be 9-94-00560 and you can do so here: https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/

That's all a private party really needs to ship.

Gunbroker is providing their guidance, but it is not law.

Generally using an FFL to ship it to another will be much cheaper than overnight anything else on your own.

GB has false information on their website and they have been informed of it, but refuse to correct it unless they get a letter from a BATF attorney. All of the FFL newsletters, the Federal Code and everything else does not matter and instead it seems that they want to cause problems by falsely telling people, non-FFLs, that they need a copy of the FFL.

BTW, I don't know of any requirement that they provide a non-FFL their FFL number (first 3 and last 5). While it is a good idea to provide in so that people can check their status, I do not believe it is a requirement.

thanks folks should be getting a call from the FFL soon and will just go from there , i am guessing as long as i ship only to the addy that matches his # all should be fine

Well just wanted to update this as i just got back from the UPS hub trying to ship my handgun....

they would not accept it due to not having a copy of the receiving FFL's paperwork , the FFL # meant nothing to them , even spent 30+ mins with the guy on the phone to his boss and still no way for me to ship it threw UPS without his FFL paperwork ...

so after a wasted 2 hours and 60 mile drive i stopped in my local FFL and begged ,as they dont ship.... she is going to contact the FFL get a copy of the paperwork and drive the 60 miles round trip to ship it for me (all at my expense) but i am hoping things go smooth from here out ... i do know this is the first and last time i ship a firearm ...

Let your FFL know they can ship from their office. I would guess it's cheaper to call for a pickup then it is to take the time / expense to drive 60 miles round trip. In all likeliness your local FFL receives firearms from Fedex/UPS and that same driver can pickup the firearm that you have planned to go outbound.

she said they bring anything they ship to the hub(think thats why they said no the first time i asked about shipping), but will ask her about just scheduling a pick up, at this point i just want to get this darn gun shipped as i am going to be losing $ when its all said and done , face to face transactions for this old Jeeper for now on ...
