      Short Answer NO

But if you are in a "Exempt" class then you don't have to do it if it's a Dealer sale or PPT

What if you're buying a handgun without a magazine and none are available, are you still required to do the safety demonstration? Or can you use a different firearm for the demonstration.

The safe handling demonstration is required by law. [PC 26850]

If it can not be performed, the CA FFL dealer can not legally release the handgun.

It has so be done with the handgun being transferred or one exactly like it.

Which is why a CA compliant magazine needs to be acquired prior to picking up the handgun.

None of the above applies to exempt persons.

per the PC, yes, you are required to do the HSD.

Or can you use a different firearm for the demonstration.
per the PC, it must be done on THAT handgun, but the HSD form allows you to do the demo on another handgun of the exact same make and model. That means that you can buy a Glock 19 and do the demo with another Glock 19 (perhaps the one in the display case). That doesn't mean that you can use a Glock 19 to do the HSD if you are buying an XYZ 123.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

the safety demonstration is not that hard, so no biggie dont worry about it, if you've owned a handgun before its a piece of cake, otherwise youtube is your friend

I'm not worried about the HSD. I'm actually buying a handgun from a private party without the mags. Hard to find these mags in 10 rounders. Patiently shopping... I just wanted to know what my options were in case I show up to pick up my firearm after a 10 day DROS, without any mags.

Are you doing it as a PPT? If so, then have the seller bring a magazine and do the HSD when you start the paperwork.

I know most shops cringe at using a standard (hi) capacity magazine for the safety demo but I wonder if you can just use the mag body? It's not hard to manually load a snapcap, then insert the mag body. Perform demo?

You need to have a working magazine since the dummy round has to get chambered.

You can manually chamber the round.

Read the procedure and please point out where you can manually chamber the round.

In both cases at two different places where I performed the HSD, the "instructor" handed me the pistol loaded with the dummy round. I had to drop the mag and clear the dummy round from the chamber.

That's why I asked the question I did. If my "instructor" was loading the round for me, he could manually load the dummy round.

If I am supposed to load the round, well then that is a different story. Moot for me anyway since I am now exempt.
