    FFL Transfer from Arizona

Hi all. I wanted to buy my Step Father a Shotgun and a mouse gun (pistol) for his birthday. I am in in AZ and he is in the San Diego CA area.

From browsing CA laws as well as Calguns wiki, I gather I would have to transfer the 2 to a FFL in his area as doesnt fall under 'intra family' for the long gun.

    My questions are,

    1) Do any of you FFL holders live in the Rancho Bernardo Area and if not can anyone recommend a FFL?

    2) What are the average costs of the FFL transfer

    3) Do I need to have the guns shipped from an FFL on my side?

Also is there anything I am missing in this that you might be able to think of?

    Thanks for your time.

This post should have the info for q 1&2. For #3, it depends on the FFL. Call them to find out.

Actually, you have to go through a FFL because you are a resident of a different state. There is no Federal intrafamilial transfer exemption for any firearm.

        Can't help with this one.

For transferring a shotgun and handgun from out of state, $75 would be a good price, $150 would be a bad price. You'll probably end up paying somewhere in between. That should include all of the receiving FFL's fees and the California DROS fee.

By law there only needs to be an FFL on the receiving end of the shipment. But some FFLs have a policy of only receiving firearms shipments from other FFLs. Try to find a receiving FFL who will accept a shipment directly from you. If you end up having to ship it through an FFL on your end then that Arizona FFL will have to be set up with California's CFLC program...

Many non-California FFLs refuse to sign up with the CFLC program, or they will charge an additional fee for the trouble.

Handguns being shipped into California for transfer generally need to be on California's "safe handgun roster." Transfers between a child and their parent are exempt from the safe handgun roster requirement, but step parents don't count unless they've legally adopted you. So the handgun that you buy for your step father will need to be on the roster...

If you were shipping a handgun to be transfered to your legal parent then you would still need to find a California FFL who knows about the exemption for family transfers. Not all California FFLs are up to speed on this. Here is a link to a thread that has a bunch of FFLs who know how to process roster exempt family transfers coming in from outside of California...

But again, this will only help you if your step father has legally adopted you or if you were transferring the handgun to your mother. Then the trick would be to find an FFL who was close to your parents, would accept the shipment directly from you, knows how to process roster exempt family transfers, and charged a good price.

I am an 07FFL in Arizona and have signed up for the CFLC program and used it in the past. My question is this,
Why not just go to Calif. and take family member to a local shop there and let him pick it out for himself and you them pay the man. Let step-dad do the 4473 on his own .
It will cost you more in transfers fees than it will a tank of gas to go visit for a day or so.
