Not to kick a dead horse, but I haven't dealt with buying/selling guns for over 20 years so here goes....

Regarding gun locks....I have some (off list) handguns and long guns that I'm planning on selling (PPT) through a FFL (hopefully) near me. These were all purchased prior to 1990 and none of them came with safety locks.

    Questions:
    1. Do I need to purchase locks to transport them to the FFL for the sale?
    2. Can I just keep the lock and reuse it for the next sale?
    3. Do the locks apply to bolt action rifles? Shotguns? Black Powder rifle?

      1) No - the issue is delivering the gun to the buyer; must have a Firearms Safety Device (which can be satisfied by a gun safe affidavit for long guns) before the buyer is allowed to take the gun home. Handguns should be transported in a completely-enclosed locked case (that's simplest).

As thread has shown, there are different approaches among FFLs for dealing with seller-supplied locks.

      2) n/a

      3) Modern rifles, yes. Shotguns, yes. Black powder, maybe -- PC 12088.8 exempts some
(a)This article does not apply to the commerce of any firearm defined as an "antique firearm" in paragraph (16) of subsection (a) of Section 921 of Title 18 of the United States Code.
That includes replicas, but not modern designs that just happen to use black powder.

Turner's in San Marcos made me buy a lock for $6. Didn't really care to b!tch about it even though I brought a lock. Turners in Kearny Mesa didn't require me to buy a lock when I brought one in with it. Didn't ask about date of lock purchase either.

When I picked up my pistol I ended up getting a new case that locked. The plastic case that came with the pistol came with a cable type lock, but it didn't lock the container, and the container had no ability to be locked. Its my understanding that when transporting a pistol it needs to be in a locked container and not be locked and placed in an unlocked container I have a pickup so there's no trunk.

You would think they would be more concerned about being in a locked container more than having it just locked.

San Diego has a weird municipal code section for cable locks. We just sell everyone a lock, locks are returnable here in the store. In fact we ask people if they don't need a lock just to return it on their next visit. (can be right after they walk out the door.)
