Maybe some sort of interference with commerce or some other equal protection situation? Afterall, the dealers all say that they are selling cars, the thousands of shops say they are selling smokes, yet these all kill WAY more people a year than firearms (assuming that's their rationale).

My guess is that if you listed the causes of death in order of magnitude there will only be ONE area that has a restriction saying you can't let the world know you're selling it. I mean after you get past the first amendment, but I digress.

This seriously seems like it's ripe for a smack down of some sort.

Wow... what's the rationale behind this? I've seen a number of stores that have handguns listed on their signs, and they've been there for years.

Among retarded laws, this one is pretty up there.

There is the possibility of DOJ looking the other way...but if they wanted to, they could tell them to take it down, or take other "punitive" action.

It is an easy write up, they won't look the other way. It was noted on my audit report even though we had it down before he left. To his fairness he noted we had it down before he left.

No handgun stuff displayed, heard about that somewhere before. Probably here.
It's probably Bonnie Wells. She is the same DOJ Agent that conducted my initial inspection. She is a very nice lady and totally reasonable. I asked her several questions, and anything she didn't know the answer to, she promptly looked up with her superiors, and got back to me via a phone call a few days later. Very professional.

I'd say as others have stated, just make sure you have all your signage posted, and that everything in your safe/storage area is legal. Good luck!

Anyone remember Pulp Fiction? The "Bonnie situation"? No idea why I just thought of that . . . .

Okay, Bonnie was great. She said we did a great job on our paperwork. We had consistent errors. But nothing that was bad and nothing to violate us for.

We need to rearrange the store so the handgun display cases can not be seen from the outside, that was the biggie, and it's not a huge deal.

                Or get some blinds.

Now this has me wondering. If they can see through your open door you have handguns, is that a big deal? Or if the door closes during non-business hours, are you cool? That is how my shop is currently set up. We close the internal outside door and you can't see into the shop anymore. The outside door is glass and you can see through it when we are open.

I would think it would matter more for non-business hours because if someone were smart, they would simply walk in during business hours and see I sell handguns. Better yet they will just look at my gun shop sign out side, figure I am a gun store, and figure I sell handguns.

                Really what a stupid law.

Hopefully the criminals don't figure out I have ammo too!

Congrats! What were your consistent errors?

I like the blinds idea. We may just put some one way tint on the windows.

The errors were very minor like putting the lock type on the bottom of the DROS form instead of the comments section. We took note on everything and adjusted our gun buying checklist so we don't have the same issues in the future.

Bonnie was nice and fair about everything.

                  Other things she checked:
Display Rostered and Non Rostered guns apart from each other.
Hi-Cap log, not much on it, no problem.
Correct posters, business license, FFL, COE, etc. to be on display.
Asked for my second hand dealer license, Madera does issue second hand dealer licenses so it was a non issue. We did show her the Handgun Acquisition form file.
                  The gun storage area.
She seemed impressed with how neat and clean all our paperwork was.

Said CA BOF was working on the Ammo Log and she was under the impression they were going to come up with an official tracking method be it paper form or electronic data capture.

Bonnie did our inspection within the first 30 days of getting our license. She said she wanted us to get started on the right foot. She is on our side. She has been with DOJ for over 20 years. Very nice lady.
