Passed Zero Violations *** First CA DOJ Inspection

Got called this AM for my first inspection on Thursday this week. Funny how it happened right after I posted that AB962 no name gaff. Anyway . . .

So how was your first inspection? What should I expect?
I'm a totally legit sort of guy, never do anything shady. So why am I all worked up over it?

Natural apprehension...it's no big deal...they'll probably want to see you have all your permits and licenses displayed, correct signage, they'll look at your bound book...cross check your inventory...blah blah blah...it's really routine stuff...but it seems like a bigger deal because it's your first...don't panic

U should panic and have a massive fire-sale and offer smoking deals to Calgunners....

On a serious note, don't even worry... just as long as you have the licenses posted and the warning signs from the state saying that "somewhere along the line some retard found that guns cause cancer" are displayed.

Bound book will get checked, DROS will be checked, but I really wouldn't worry about it too much

      Good luck with the inspection.

I just had my first one, only been and FFL for a month. Took about an hour and half, no big deal. Just make sure signs etc. are posted.

If it is Bob, make sure there are no handguns started on DROS without the gun being there. I think it is totally legal for us to do so, but they don't like it. Make sure no one can tell you sell handguns from outside the shop. No mentions of handguns, no signs of handguns, nothing.

I think that is the only thing they got me on. Otherwise, it was a pleasant audit. I think mainly the DOJ just wants to see you know what you are doing and are making a good attempt to do so. Their audits are done in a day.

ATF is a little more of a stickler, but it still depends on who your auditor is. My ATF auditor is firm but fair so I like her.

It's going to be someone named Bonnie. All guns are in the shop before we start a DROS. Like I said, we are trying to be safe.

No handgun stuff displayed, heard about that somewhere before. Probably here.

Also... what's the deal with no signs about handguns displayed?

                        CA PC 12071(c)(4):

                        (4) No pistol, revolver, or other firearm or imitation thereof
capable of being concealed upon the person, or placard advertising
the sale or other transfer thereof, shall be displayed in any part of
the premises where it can readily be seen from the outside.

There is the possibility of DOJ looking the other way...but if they wanted to, they could tell them to take it down, or take other "punitive" action.

I'd love to see Gura and/or CGF get a hold of that one...not that it's particularly restricting, but the 1st/2nd amendment interaction there is pretty compelling.

"...don't worry... you will be fine"

When I worked for Diamond Jim's [Jim Tsarnas] back in 2000 thru 2004, was
my responsibility to oversee sales of 200 to 260 DROS applications per month.

Then opening my business in '07 after Jim sold his store; for a KitTable FFL
like me, was a no brainer. Luckily I have done business with the same ATF
Agent at DJ's, and so we were very familiar with each other... she had a
previous knowledge of my attention to detail.

My only recommendation to you is, be thorough. Look at your compliance
inspection as a learning experience, and let the Agent know you are looking
forward to learning from them on how to better streamline your records. Now,
you DO NOT need to kiss their proverbial derriere... just be cordial.

And don't worry... you will be fine

We will however need a report from you how you did, and what you learned.

My first inspection from ATF a year ago went without a hitch. The Agent
said; "I should write you up for being so perfect!" And as for DOJ... I haven't
seen DOJ since about three years ago.
