Just to be clear, for the DROS software you need a reader that does keyboard emulation so when you open an app like wordpad or the DROS interface and swipe a Cali DL, it essentially types the information from the strip into the application.

You'll need a separate reader for credit cards.

Actually, you also need to swipe in notepad to have the info at the top of the sheet you copy the CDL or CID on or that was how I was told to do it but if it works with the DROS app I would assume it would work with notepad or whatever to add the info to the top of the copy.

Really? I only swipe into wordpad if I'm using a DROS worksheet because the internet is not available. Are you saying the DOJ wants you to scan into wordpad even if your doing an online DROS?

Either way, if you don't have the online then you should do the swipe on the copy of the ID. I am not familiar enough with the readers to say there is one that works with DROS app but not wordpad or notepad, just saying you need that compatibility. Although I have plenty of DROS with no swipe at all due to damaged mag stripe.

The card reader that works with DROS software also works with Wordpad. It does what is referred to as Keyboard Emulation.

This is not quite correct. You have to try to swipe the card, either in the DROS entry system or into a file if you don't have an Internet connection at the time the DROS is filled out (either online or the paper worksheet). If it does not read, then and only then are you required to make a copy of it. Either is NOT acceptable in the sense that you have to try to swipe the card, you can not skip the step of trying to swipe the card.

The problem with DOJ is that they are not tech saavy people. They give you two options and say you have to buy it from one of two suppliers. Thats all bull$****.

I am currently in need of a card reader and from what I gather, it needs to be an "emulator" type and "three track" as opposed to the other types that require drivers to interpret the data or are only one or two track.....

It seems one should not have to spend more than $50 to get an appropriate reader.

It was an open item box and works fine.

The "8" stands for black. A "7" would be white.

I would never pay more than $50.00 delivered for an item like this.

It has to be 3-track to read CA DL.

I agree about the difficulty finding the supplies and the information.
