    Card Readers

I saw on the State's web site that you have to buy a card reader direct. Is this the only way to get them, best deal? Are they ever available used?

    From the State-
To obtain a magnetic card swipe reader, contact the manufacturer... You must inform the manufacturer that you intend to use the device with the California DOJ DROS Entry System. The cost for the device is $95.00 plus tax, shipping, and handling.

I have never seen them used. The state says they are the only ones that work but I am going to try and aftermarket one for my backup and see if it does the same thing.

From what I have found is they are all about the same price, around $100 plus shipping. I have had to replace a couple since we started using them and once for the new USB reader. The new ones are digital not analog.

The make and model is listed somewhere. I bought mine used on fleabay for 30.00. It has worked great for almost three years now. (Knocking on wood)

It doesn't matter. A card reader is a card reader.

Any three track reader should work. Do not buy a 2-track, it won't read CA DLs.

That's the exact one we just got from the same company. Works great and only $46 dollars.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll try that provantage one, at half the price of the one the state wants me to buy!

I know, I know...necropost, but is anyone using a POS keyboard and reader in one (trackball too, maybe)?

If so, please post make and model.

Just to be clear, for the DROS software you need a reader that does keyboard emulation so when you open an app like wordpad or the DROS interface and swipe a Cali DL, it essentially types the information from the strip into the application.

You'll need a separate reader for credit cards.

For me this would just be for the DROS software. I was just curious if a keyboard with card reader was available for this.
