Anyone here have a small FFL side business that doesn't impose on their time at all? I just don't see having a side FFL as viable. Sure it gets you good discounts, but I bet it eats up more time than you thought it would. I know that is the case in a store front FFL. Then again, I want my business to be successful so I want to get more and more customers. And the better you treat people, the more they tell other people.

That is what I would see as the challenge in the kitchen table business. The better deals you give, the more people are going to want to come see you. And they want to come during your dinner hour, they want to come during your kid's game, they want to give you their money and you might find it hard to say, "Not right now."
www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.

We just had our first child about 11 months ago and my wife and I are trying to figure out a way for her to be home more. It could be a great way for her to stay with the baby and take care of some of the day to day operations stuff. I have a great job now but the commute to Irvine every day is terrible. If I could grow this into a business that would allow my wife to be home more, I would love nothing more. I am not counting on it though. I suppose its the whole counting the chickens thing. From a business perspective I don't want to over extend myself finiancially and risk other assets right away; not until I know it will be a viable business plan.

When you consider the costs, especially insurance, it is not really profitable to be a home based FFL unless you are willing to spend a lot of time doing it. Consider all of the expenses and then what you are going to get in return. Also, consider it is going to take more time than you think to deal with everything.

What kind of insurance do FFL's generally carry? I am assuming general business liability, is a personal umbrella also normal?

I would love to do it for my own purchases alone but I too have heard that you have to have a proper storefront in San Diego.

I can say from doing all the permits and paperwork this business would not be viable as a work from home type deal.

Also expect it to take about 9 months. That's how long it took for us (in San Diego) to get our FFL.
                  Yeah, about that...

The last of the true "kitchen table FFL" dealers is Gussler. Everything else in the Whale's Reproductive Tract requires a commercial venue, etc.

I have an insurance policy from the NRA affiliated business. It should most everything, but you never know.
