The only shop I deal with anymore is PRK Arms in Fresno. I've been kicked out of, or refused service at every other shop in the area while asking about AKs/Saigas/OLLs. It's been almost two years since I've set foot in a different Fresno shop. Now the other local FFLs deal with SOME of that stuff BECAUSE PRK proved the point, but I will not deal with them.

I won't spend a dime with the guys that treated me like a criminal, including many of the vendors here like Atlantic. Maybe the guy that runs Atlantic just rubbed me the wrong way, but I F$%^ hate that everyone sucks his d$#* here now. He hung up on me two years ago and I have a loooong memory for that kind of treatment.

I've never been told "No, we won't do that" by PRK. Only "we'll see what we can do about that" sometimes with the caveat: "if it doesn't exist we might have to tool up and make it... how much are you willing to spend, and how long are you willing to wait? 2 million dollars and 2.5 years would get us started on a production facility for what you're asking for "

"Can do" attitude all the way!

Not to detract from PRK, they've treated me well but have you tried Breco or A&A for some of the more routine stuff?

Nope. I can get ANYTHING I want (and can legally have - per the law, not some scared-of-the-big-bad-DOJ gunshop owner's interpretation of the law) at PRK Arms. Even if they don't have it in stock I can have them order it.

Haven't been to Breco since he refused to transfer NDS receivers for me two years ago. Never been to AA and will probably never go to Spencers either. In this economy, and in the kind of industry the gun business seems to be, there are a lot of fly-by-night operations that won't be around too long. Gun shops are like barber shops; you stick with one when you find one you like. The new shops that are popping up in the valley will dilute the consumer base a bit, increase competition, and lower prices. Unless a shop has a loyal customer base and/or a lot of capital to take a loss for the next two years (at least), they will fail.

I'm a loyal customer to the places that are like-minded and treat me right. I'll stick with PRK.

Yeah I have to agree that most gunstores around here seem to expect everybody that walks in to be satisfied with what they have on display and when you start asking about this model or that model that they dont have...they act like they dont know what your talking about... they start dancing around with the ...oh they are backordered, we can order it but dont know when we can expect it in or I could find out about a price on that and get back to you...Why arent they honest and up front with us and tell us like it is? with a response like...
"Hey the Main reason is because this is Calif, and there are only x amount of those approved on the doj current list, so you are very limited as a consumer as to what you can buy new in the first place".sure because the least expensive .45 semi avail, is also the most popular and everybody is fighting for them..we dont know when we can get them."
See those would be honest responses..
But everybody that walks in the door should not be expected to run to the case and drool over the $550 and up .45 semis, when they were just at home looking at Hi-Points for under $170. Not everybody is aware that there is a doj list for california, where to find it and that those are the ONLY ones you can buy new, period. Hell there are so few guns of certain calibers, the gunstore should KNOW exactly what the price of the least expensive .45 semi is and the model and availability..Its certainly not a mystery.. Not everybody can afford to only buy whats behind the counter..
If they would try to actually "help the customer" they would gladly pay a few bucks more, because of good customer service..and maybe show some sincerity in taking a few extra minutes with the customer, instead of staring at the cel phone or computer screen the during most, if not all of the conversation.. I know I would.
After seeing a lot of neg posts about gun shops, I wanted to see for myself...
I did this at a local shop to test them .. Like I said, I got extra time..I never asked to touch anything and walked around kinda looking at everything before I asked any questions, as I wanted to wait til I thought I could get undivided attention...
Epic Fail I went to another gunstore today as well, and at least the guys were attentative and not staring at cel phones or computer screens, more professional, but still stingy about providing information on the spot about price, time to get, etc..
Too much demand for the lower end guns, and so few that are available...
I was only asking about .45's and nobody said that this model>>>>the blah blah...Is the least expensive one available.. Nobody.
I mean look at the doj Ca list and how hard would it be for a gunstore to say, well the bottom line on .45 semi automatic pistol from us is this... everything else is higher, that gives the noob a starting point..
Oh and I want to know where that case of guns are on display for $135.. Nowhere in California I bet.
God I hate this government but love the weather..
