    Interfamilial handgun transfer questions...

My son lives in Arizona, I live in California. I know he can buy a hand gun in Arizona and gift it to me but I have heard all kinds of interpretations as to what restrictions apply. Can he gift me a S&W M&P9 M2.0 with the 15 round magazine (MPN 11683), or does the 10 round restriction apply ? if it does, can he still gift me that gun if I have the magazine modified to hold only 10 rounds or will the 10 round magazine fit it ? That model of the Shield does not seem to be on the California Roster in any configuration. Does the Roster apply to a son to father interstate gift ? Finally, what forms and fees apply ?
There is lots of mis-information out there on this topic.
    Thanks....

No importation of 10+ rd mags. They’d have to be blocked or removed prior to shipping in CA (I believe although not sure if FFL can block before delivering it to you). Also, no threaded barrels.

Other than that, he’d have to write a letter stating he’s gifting you a firearm with copy of his DL. Check with your FFL on what they’d need to receive the firearm.

Read through this thread https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1179771 it should answer most if not all of your questions.

As far as the mags go, they have to be either removed or converted to hold 10 rounds prior to coming into Ca. If the FFL receiving them has the proper permit to receive them they can do it, for a fee no doubt. I believe that there are 10 round mags available for that gun. Make sure you know what you're buying the mags for, the M&P9 is a different gun than the M&P Shield.

        A M&P 9 that hold 15 rds is not a Shield. It is just a M&P 9.

The mag must be 10rds or blocked to 10rds. They do make 10rd mags for the M&P 9. The gun can be shipped to your CA FFL with 15rd mags if they are willing to permanently block them to 10rds before giving them to you.
